ALCOHOL AND/OR
DRUGS
Boozin' and Choozin'-
Do your group members have questions about alcohol, the laws related to alcohol use and in need of good advice on what responsible drinking really is? If so, they will benefit greatly from this fun and interactive workshop that acknowledges some students on campus participate in drinking and some students don’t. This workshop is an open discussion that teaches students how best to handle situations that arise. Come have a mocktail and discuss pros and cons of drinking, and examine the reasons why people drink. It’s not our policy to preach about drinking, but simply to provide the pertinent information college students need to responsible when and if
drinking.
Shots & Ladders - Similar to everyone’s favorite childhood board game, this college style Chutes and Ladders game will engage students in a lively competition. The team that learns the most about alcohol, marijuana and other drugs by moving its shot glass around the large M-(for
UMaine)-shaped board game course wins the game. An exciting and informative format for teaching students the nitty gritty and the unknowns about drug and alcohol use.
Up in Smoke - Do those people smoking cigarettes
outside your residence hall bother you? Are you concerned about your or your friend’s nicotine addiction? Interested to find out more about smoking cigarettes and its consequences? This
is a very informative workshop designed to provide information about smoking in an interactive way. Play a fun bingo game, discover and discuss some smoking statistics, and learn some resources to help you or your friend quit smoking.
DIVERSITY
Take a Walk in My Shoes -
The majority of students on this campus appear the same,
have similar values and backgrounds, and may not know what
it is like to be someone else - someone who is perhaps less
fortunate than they are or someone who might look different
physically or be of a different age than they are. This
workshop assigns participants different identities of people
they might not be so familiar with, and then asks a series
of questions allowing students to discuss issues they might
not have thought about before. This workshop was created in
hopes of enlightening students to the diversity even a small
community has and the injustices imposed upon many of its
residents.
You
Don't Know How it Feels...-
Interested in finding out what its like to be GLBT, have
been raped, have HIV/AIDS,
have an eating disorder, has an alcohol/drug problem, or is
dealing with depression/suicide ?
This workshop allows you to hear the inner most
thoughts of people who are dealing with these issues, and
allows you to interact with them by playing a role (a short
speaking part) in the life of the main character.
This allows you to get a better understanding of
another person life and their emotions.
EDUCATION, STUDY SKILLS & STRESS
Rest & Relaxation- This is a must-have
workshop for every college student who simply needs a break
from studying, working and the overall hectic schedule of
school. Its goal is to help students examine the stressors
in their lives and figure out ways to manage stress on a
daily basis. One of two (or both if time permits) activities
is presented, the Backrub Circle and a Guided Meditation.
Put on some comfy clothes and prepare to escape the stresses
of tests, classes and term papers and enter a world of rest
and relaxation!
Study Break- The college years can be
one of the most stressful periods in a person's life. If
you or your group has questions about procrastination, test taking
tips, study habits and where to receive the help one needs
to succeed in the school setting, this workshop is a must
for you. A packet of good study habits information is
presented, and then participants play a board game to
explore resources on campus and learn some study tips. If
time allows, the workshop includes a discussion of all
things school related.
UMaine 101- Do your new residents, transfer students
or first-year students need more information about what's on
campus? Do they have questions about where to get help with
academics, which clubs to participate in, registration, or
who to call with an emergency? If so, this workshop is
perfect for you. We'll play a fun and interactive trivia
game to get students familiar with the campus while learning
about all of the services they will benefit from. It will
also teach students where to turn to if they want to get
involved on campus. We'll provide many free handouts that
give great information, tips and contact information for
different services on campus. A must-have workshop for
especially new students, but anyone will benefit from it!
HEALTH, WELLNESS & SAFETY
Body
Image & Attitudes-
Ever wonder if what you see in the magazines is realistic?
Ever ask yourself if we really look like those models that
grace the covers of Vogue, Glamour, People or Sports
Illustrated? If so, this workshop is perfect for you and
your group members. We'll search through various magazines
and choose advertisements, articles and pictures that we
consider unrealistic portrayals of both men and women. This
is a discussion-based workshop so we'll talk about all
things media image related.
Body Reflections- Eating disorders are oftentimes referred to as a
silent epidemic - most everyone knows someone who has or had
an eating disorder, but few are willing to talk about the
issue. That's where this workshop comes in. Through an
interactive board game, we will provide pertinent
information about signs and symptoms of eating disorders,
fad diet and body image facts and ways to help someone who
suffers from an eating disorder. We'll talk about the
statistics and about how serious Anorexia Nervosa and
Bulimia Nervosa really are. This workshop is a lighthearted,
informative attempt to provide relevant information about
serious topics.
Wheel
of Wellness Fortune-
Want a general workshop that covers most topics
presented by Peer Ed? Want
to learn as much as you can in one sitting?
This is the workshop for you!
Wheel of Wellness Fortune covers everything from
STD/I’s to campus info. With a colorful wheel to spin to
select a topic and points to win, this is not only a great
way to learn, but a fun night with the Peer Eds!
This is a great presentation if you just can’t
decide which other excellent workshop to choose!
When
Rites Become Wrongs-
Are you in a fraternity, sorority, on a sports team,
or in another student organization?
Do you have questions about what hazing is?
Do you question whether you or a friend have been
hazed? This
workshop offers help with determining what is hazing, as
well as appropriate steps to take if hazing does occur
though the use of discussions and real life examples.
RAPE & SEXUAL ASSAULT
Be safe. Be smart. Be aware.- Probably
everyone's been in a situation when walking outside on
campus in the dark and looking over your shoulder to see if
anyone is around you. We'll teach you tips for staying safe
on campus, how to avoid dangerous situations and things to
be conscious of when it comes to rape and sexual assault.
We'll watch a short but powerful video. It's a serious
subject, but something we all should educate ourselves
about. To reward you for learning more about this important
issue, we'll draw names out to give away a prize, including
whistles,
pepper spray, breakaway lanyards, etc.
Let's Talk About Sex- Most students have their own
ideas about what the typical "hook-up" or sexual experience
entails. In this workshop, students will put the steps to a
typical hook-up in order, and and talk about safer sex
practices, consent and how alcohol and drugs mix things up a
little bit. This is definitely a fun and interactive
workshop that will allow students to talk about important
issues related to sexual experiences. If time allows,
participants will write questions anonymously related to
consent, rape, sex, etc. and the facilitators will
facilitate the answer period.
RELATIONSHIPS,
COMMUNICATION & TEAMBUILDING
Men
& Women Sharing- Ever wonder why girls usually
go to the bathroom in pairs or why guys blame every bad mood
on PMS? Ever wonder why guys think they have to be a macho
man all the time or girls have to talk through every little
argument? We might not have all the answers, but it will be
a great discussion anyway! Bring all those questions you
have always wanted to ask about the opposite sex, because
we’re here to try and answer these questions as a group.
We’ll put the questions in a hat and ask them anonymously,
and then see where the conversation takes us; hopefully it
will lead to some answer. The phrase “Men are from Mars,
Women are from Venus” just might prove true in this
workshop!
Roommate
Game-
How well do you really know the person you live with?
Similar to the Dating game, this game is a way to test how
much you really know about your fellow hall roommate. We’ll
go through questions asking about you and your roommate’s
favorite things to do, the color of your toothbrushes and
what stuffed animals you sleep with, and then we’ll see
which pair of roommate knows each other best. So, get ready
to be quizzed!! This is one quiz however, you hopefully
won’t have to study for!!
TEAM
Factory- Its that time of the year again when your
group or staff are just getting to know each other. Have no
idea how to break the ice? Well then leave it to us. We have
plenty of icebreakers and silly activities to break the ice
and help people grow comfortable together. It doesn't matter
if it is a dorm, student group, Res. Life staff, we have
plenty of activities to help every type of group break the
ice and grow comfortable together.
SEXUAL HEALTH
Rubber to the Rescue-
HIV/AIDS is an ever increasing world epidemic. Ever wonder
about the ways the virus can and cannot be contracted, or
what the testing process is for HIV/AIDS? We’ll clear up any
and hopefully all myths you’ve heard, and teach you and your
group a few facts about the HIV virus. You’ll leave this
workshop more reassured and knowledgeable about this
important topic that affects people most frequently within
the college age group. We’ll play a game to learn the facts
and then watch a short video to see how HIV affects people
in real life. Knowledge really is power in this workshop!!
Sex
Jeopardy/Connection-
You've heard of the famous
Jeopardy game-show, now play it Peer Ed style! In this
typical game, we'll learn about HIV/AIDS, sexually
transmitted diseases, contraceptives and more! Have fun,
laugh a little and learn while you're at it.
