Bookmarks | Hyperlinks | Email | Hot Spots | Recalculating

Links

You may want to include Hyperlinks, Navigational, Bookmark, Email, and/or Hot Spot links on your page. This will allow the visitor to move quickly through your page, other pages within your web site, other pages on the Web, or to email someone. A link is activated when a user moves their mouse over the text and clicks on the hyperlink.  A hyperlink can also be a picture, map, or graphic.

Bookmarks

If you have a fairly long document, you should insert Bookmarks.  Bookmarks are links to items on the same page, sort of like a table of contents. Below is an example of a page with bookmarks and links to items on the same page. Each letter is a link to a business section beginning with that letter.

To create a bookmark, put your cursor in front of the text you want to link.  Click Insert, Bookmark, and Bookmark name -- give the bookmark a short name and click OK. When you click OK, a small, gray square, with a flag, Bookmark flag symbol. will appear before your text to indicate that it is a bookmark.

Now create a link from the top of your page by typing appropriate text, highlighting the text, and clicking on the Hyperlink Button Hyperlink button.. A dialog box will appear – select the Bookmark button and choose the correct bookmark. A pound sign indicates a bookmark has been linked. --  #bookmark.

Hyperlinks

If you want to link to another page within the current website, highlight your text, click on the Hyperlink Button, select Existing File or Web Page, select the Page, and click
OK

Follow the same steps above to link to a page on the Web, but this time, in the Address section, type in the complete address of the Web page http://www.umaine.edu/phoebe/Links.htmBe sure your address is correct or the link will not work.  You can use the Browse the Web button Browse the Internet button.  to browse for the correct web page and FrontPage will insert it into the address section for you, or you can simply cut and paste the information into the address section.  Always test your links to ensure they are working.  If they are not working correctly, check your address information. 

To link to another page within the current website with a bookmark, highlight your text, click on the Hyperlink Button, select Existing File or Web Page, and select the Page.  Now click Bookmark, select the correct bookmark name, and  click OK.  A # sign indicates that a bookmark has been included in the address, as indicated in the example below.  Remember, you can only link to bookmarks within the current website.  Example: link.htm#bookmark

To remove a bookmark or hyperlink, right click anywhere on the link, and select Hyperlink Properties. The Hyperlink dialog box should open up -- click Remove Link.

Email Links

To create an email link, type the link information, highlight it, and click the Hyperlink Button – a dialog box will appear. Click on Email Address and type in the email address of the recipient. FrontPage automatically adds the mail to: portion required in all email links. You can also add a Subject Line at this point.

Older versions of FrontPage have a "Make a Hypelink that Sends E-mail" button Make a Hyperlink that Sends E-mail button. that you must select to bring up the "Create E-mail Hyperlink" dialog box. When the dialog box appears, type in the email address and click OK.

Hot Spots

You can create hyperlinks by using different parts of a picture. Each separate hyperlink within a drawing is called a "hot spot." To add a hot spot link to an image, select the image by clicking on it.
The Polygon button.Click the Polygon button on the Image toolbar. Move the cursor over the image. The cursor turns into a cutting tool. Trace a shape onto the image by clicking and dragging your mouse. The Create Hyperlink dialog box appears when you complete the shape. Find and click the file name of the page you want to link to. The file name appears in the URL box. Click OK in the Create Hyperlink dialog box.

Remember the Undo button. This gives you lots of chances to re-trace your hot spots, if you don't get them perfectly the first time.  

Recalculating Hyperlinks

If you are having problems with your website and/or have broken hyperlinks, try recalculating your hyperlinks. To recalculate your links, close all open pages, click on Tools in the menu bar and select "Recalculate Hyperlinks".   A "Recalculate Hyperlinks" dialog box will appear, click "Yes" to start the recalculating process.  The process may take several minutes depending on the size of your website.  Once the links have been recalculated, you can begin to work on your web pages again.
