Meta Tag Descriptions, Titles, and Keywords The Meta Description Tag, Meta Title Tag, and Meta Keyword Tag are located in the Head of the document HTML code. Here is an example of what a Meta Description Tag looks like. You can add your own description under the "content=" portion of the tag. <meta name="description" content="This website tutorial will teach you how to create web pages that are attractive, easy to navigate, and eye-appealing"> When creating your Meta Description Tag you must adhere to the guidelines that the search engines have in place. For example, there is a limitation to the number of characters that you can use in your Meta Description. Another thing to keep in mind is that some of the search engines and directories use the keywords in the description as a way of determining if your site is relevant to the search performed. This is also where concepts and strategies like keyword proximity come into play and is a high factor for your search engine ranking. Also important like your title tag and description tag is your Meta Name Tag. Here is an example of a Meta Name Tag. <meta name="title" content="FrontPage Web Design"> FrontPage 2003 has made it easy for you to add descriptions, titles, and keywords to your pages without adding tag code information. Meta Keywords Tags &
Keyword Optimization The Meta Keywords Tag is not viewable by the visitor -- it resides in the HTML coding of the page. This tag is only used by search engines and directories as a reference to what search results your web site should appear in. If you decide to create the Meta Keywords Tags, remember this: you can separate the keywords by commas, but if you do, do not put a space after the commas. This will cause there search engines to see this as an empty space, and also is wasting space in your code. This, just as any other tag, must be used properly and within guidelines that the search engines make. <meta name="keywords" content="web, design, tutorial,FrontPage"> Another thing to remember is that there are certain "poison" or "stop" words that the search engines immediately filter out. An example of one of the "stop" words would be "free", "online", or "the." Here are some helpful Meta Tag Resources.
