UMaine President Robert A. Kennedy:
"Campaign Maine is as much about our state's future as our university's
future, and we all feel a real sense of pride when our friends, like
Bion and Dorain, make a generous gift like the one that we're announcing
today.
"Their wonderful gift also draws attention to what is most important
about UMaine--providing the opportunities our students need to succeed
during their time at the university, and to leave prepared to take their
place in our communities. Said another way, this gift will create
opportunities for current and future UMaine students to emulate the
wonderful examples of Bion and Dorain Foster."
Sky Mayhew, UMaine Entrepreneur: "As a student here, I've got to witness
the Innovation Center grow, and see how it has directly affected me and
the other companies trying to work out of here and build something. When
we first came into this place, our goals were somewhat
one-dimensional--it was just about making some extra money on the side,
having a little bit of a business, doing something interesting. It has
grown tremendously off that. Due to the inspiration and the connections
we've achieved here, we've created something that has become bigger than
ourselves, and we've developed a product and a company that we are
passionate about."
Bion Foster: "What we want to do is we want to be involved in the
Student Innovation Center. I really think that with Doug Hall's vision
in helping to create what this Innovation Center is today, and with the
tremendous faculty--with Jake Ward, Renee Kelly and Deb Neuman, and
everybody involved with the curriculum up here--I can only imagine what
the driving force and the influence that this Student Innovation Center
is going to have, to not only the students that are here on campus, but
to the people and students here in the state of Maine. I can see this
basically being a prototype of many Student Innovation Centers likely it
to come. But guess what, folks--we're the first. We're number one."
