For 21 years now, as was published in
the flier, this university has been privileged to host this event, and
to recognize some of Maine's most accomplished women, fittingly in honor
of the legendary UMaine professor, Maryanne Hartman. In a state that
takes justifiable pride in being home to so many women leaders--people
like Margaret Chase Smith, Olympia Snowe, Susan Collins, Lee Softly,
Libby Mitchell, and the list could go on, and we'd have to look no
further than past Maryanne Hartman awardees for dozens of others--it's
fitting that the state university should recognize achievement in this
way. And I use the word "leaders" very intentionally--the people who we
honor here tonight and all those women who've come before are leaders in
the truest sense of the word.
