This facility and its related programs
will allow us to capitalize on the initiative and creative thinking that
are characteristic of UMaine students, staff, and faculty. As you may
know, UMaine has a track record and a history that's very strong in this
area. We're recognized widely for our entrepeneurism and related
activities, and that is only going to get better with this new facility.
Because of the University of Maine's success, Maine has been listed as
one of the top 10 states for spin-off businesses. The first year
that we were listed, we had 10 businesses that were spun off from
technology at UMaine and four of them were from our students. The
University of Maine is responsible for more intellectual
activity--patents, licenses, spin-off businesses, and invention
disclosures--more intellectual property than all of the other research
institutions in the state combined. That's what's coming out of the
University of Maine, and it's only going to get better. This is a
wonderful facility, which says a lot about what UMaine has become, and
even more about where we're headed--capitalizing on the incredibly
creativity of our students and our faculty.
