I'm pleased and proud that the major
Martin Luther Ling celebration in this area is held on our campus, and
that's entirely appropriate. Universities should be places to celebrate
Rev. King's ideals, such as compassion, peaceful discourse, and the
pursuit of real and meaningful equality among all people. The most
important and fundamental principle of any university is inclusiveness
and open discourse, which leads to the free exchange of ideas. Mutual
understanding and mutual respect follow, creating stronger relationships
and stronger communities. It really is part of the educational process
for our students and for all of us.
