Office of the President

Videos - Orono Spectral Solutions Grand Opening

Senator Susan Collins: "One, two, three."

*ribbon is cut - applause*

Senator Susan Collins: "This company represents an essential part of Maine's future--a high-tech firm, powered by research, begun at the University of Maine, led by University of Maine graduates, and motivated to provide cutting-edge technology with widespread applications--commercial applications, military applications, and homeland security applications, and it is so exciting to celebrate this grand opening."

Carl Tripp, president, Orono Spectral Solutions, UMaine Chemistry Professor: "We just came back from a major tradeshow where we introduced our first product--we'll show you later--and it received overwhelming response. Can I say that? We're in the midst of negotiations with several large players, so we're really excited about it. What I'm really excited about is the first idea came about six months ago, so we went from the first idea to product launch in under six months. That is what we have to do as a company. We have to stay aggressive if we want to compete at the international level, and grow this bigger."

Robert A. Kennedy, president, University of Maine: "But at the end, one of the things I think we need to celebrate is the entrepreneurial spirit and creativity of our faculty. That's what this really is about. None of these other things would have come about had it not been for good ideas and good people at the University of Maine, and the opportunities that have been provided through research funding and other things. Certainly Target Technology and the Student Innovation Center--Carl made references to those things--those all help, but without that entrepreneurial spirit and the creative activity of our faculty, and the intellectual activities that go on at the university, none of these things would have come about."
