Videos - Student Fitness and Recreation Center Dedication
*applause*
Robert A. Kennedy, President, University of Maine: "When anybody walks
into this facility--and some of you are doing it today for the first
time--the people are absolutely awestruck. It's a tremendous facility
and it's having an enormous impact on this campus. Perhaps more amazing
than the facility itself is the transformation--the transformative
impact--that this building is having. It's a hub of activity and a place
for students and staff and community members to recreate, to socialize,
in a place that exudes class and quality.
"When Mary and I came to the University of Maine, the Memorial Student
Union was under construction, it was being renovated and expanded, and
in addition there was a planned renovation of all of our dining
facilities. And I really felt, as most people did, that those two events
were really two parts of a three-part transformation that needed to
happen at the university. The third was a student recreation center, and
those three, this one really completes the trifecta of facilities on
this campus that will have a huge impact for generations to come of
UMaine students and the community that we serve.
"I said at the time--and I'm sure there are some that remember it, and
maybe sort of were a little bit quizical at the time--but I said at the
time that I felt this facility was so needed because it would have an
impact on our academics as much as it would any other aspect of the
campus, and I truly believe that to be true. I think we're seeing that
evidenced today and we'll see it into the future."
