Personal Property Insurance

Financial books and papers

The University of Maine does not carry insurance protecting student belongings. Check to be sure the items brought to campus are under coverage with your parent or guardian’s homeowner’s policy or a separate personal property policy.

The University of Maine assumes no responsibility for personal items.

It is recommended students engrave valuable items brought to campus—such as bikes, televisions, laptop computers and PDAs—with a unique and personal identification number. Record this number along with the serial number of those valuable items and store these records in a secure location along with digial images of the items, if possible.

WARNING!

DO NOT USE a driver’s license number, student ID or Social Security number for property identification numbers! Use of these secure numbers can lead to identity theft.

Along with a list of valuable items and the associated identification numbers, always keep a list of credit cards, credit-card numbers and toll-free numbers for the credit card companies, in case your cards are stolen or lost. Keep this list in a secure location...preferably not in your wallet next to your credit cards.
