Damage in Common Areas
In common areas where excessive or frequent damage occurs and
responsibility is not placed, it may be necessary to hold the
occupants of the section, floor or building where the damage
occurred fiscally responsible.
• Damage to a suite in DTAV will be the responsibility of all
residents of that suite unless an individual is identified.
• Individuals
and groups wishing to reserve a common area must do so using
an accountability form.
• Individuals responsible for damage to a common area will be held
fiscally responsible. If responsible parties cannot be identified,
the sponsoring group or individual will be billed.
• Cases of disputed guilt will be referred to the Office of Community Standards, Rights and Responsibilities.
• In the case of malicious
damage, disciplinary action will be taken in addition to billing.

Assessment and Appeals
The Community
Coordinator and hall board will determine the fiscally responsible
individual(s) for damage in Common Areas. Students
wishing to appeal
need to go through the student administrative appeal policy.
Each hall governing board will hear cases of unassigned
damage to common areas within that facility.

Trash
If room trash is left in common areas and a custodian must remove
and dispose of the trash, the responsible student will be charged
$12 per bag. If the custodian is unable to determine to whom
the trash belongs, the hall will be charged for the disposal.

Pianos
Maintenance or tuning of pianos in residence hall common areas,
due to misuse, may be charged to the residents as part of common
area damage.

Elevators
Convenience elevators are available in all dormitories on campus.
Jumping in and overcrowding an elevator as well as forcing the
doors open before the elevator stops is known to cause serious
damage. When such an incident occurs, the cost of repair
is billed to the students involved (if identified) or to all
residents of the hall.

Inappropriate Smoke/Fire Alarms
Inappropriate alarms (false alarms) may result through accidental
behavior, such as cooking in authorized areas (cooking is prohibited
in regular student rooms, although it is permitted in suites
or apartments with cooking facilities).
Accidental alarms may
be charged to the student at the rate of $100, plus any
necessary cleaning or repair costs.
Malicious false alarms may
result by intentionally activating a fire alarm pull station,
damaging part of the alarm system
or by intentionally activating a smoke alarm.
Malicious false
alarms may be charged to the student at a rate of $400,
plus any necessary cleaning or repair costs. Malicious false
alarms may also
result in referral to the Office of Community Standards, Rights and Responsibilities.

Room Check-Out
Upon check-out, your room will be inspected for condition of
the room and its contents. Room clearance paperwork must be completed at the time of clearance and submitted to the Resident Assistant, Assistant Community Coordinator, or Community Coordinator Any excessive cleaning will be charged
to the student(s) at a custodial labor rate of $26.00 per hour.
Any damage to the room or its furnishings will be charged to
the student at the actual cost or a reasonable estimated cost.
If common area furniture or furnishings are found in a student
room, the student(s) will be charged at the rate of $12.00 per
item. All costs will be charged to the student's account.

Locks
All residences facilities and rooms, with the exception of Estabrooke*, have locks with access via your MaineCard.
If you lose your MaineCard, it is important to declare your card lost ASAP. You can stop by the Student Service Center during business hours , call Public Safety during non-business hours, or declare it lost through the Online Card Office. As soon as possible you should go to the Student Service Center and get a replacement MaineCard.
*Room keys (Estabrooke only) must be returned
when a room change takes place and at the time of clearance. At checkout,
room keys must be returned (Estabrooke only) to the Resident
Assistant, Assistant Community Coordinator or Community Coordinator. Keys are not to be duplicated, loaned or
left in your residence hall mailbox. Lost keys should be reported to your Resident
Assistant or Community Coordinator immediately. The cost for a lock change due to a lost
key (Estabrooke only), or a key not turned in at check-out is $40.00
and is billed to the student’s account.
