Recycling: How to Sort & Separate


Resource Recovery Room

UMaine Recycles sorts and transports recyclables to the Bangor Recycling Center for further processing and baling. The Maine Resource Recovery Association then sells the bales to mills and recycling firms, which make new products from recycled materials.

High grade paper posted on bulletin board

High Grade Paper: Office, computer, fax, and copy type paper; scrap and note paper; envelopes without windows or with windows removed.

Preparation: Clean and dry. Staples and tape are okay. Remove all paper clips. Empty all envelopes.

Sorting:  High grade papers can be mixed together.  Do not mix with low grade papers or cardboard.

Stack of newspapers, low grade paper

Low Grade Paper: Newspapers and inserts, magazines and glossy paper, catalogs, books, junk mail and receipts.

Preparation: Clean and dry. Staples and tape are okay. Remove all paper clips. Empty all envelopes.

Sorting:  Low grade papers can be mixed together.  Do not mix with high grade papers or cardboard.

Torn corrugated cardboard

Cardboard and Boxboard: Corrugated cardboard and box board, manila and kraft envelopes, brown paper bags. 

Preparation: Clean and dry. Staples and tape are okay. Flatten or crush boxes.

Sorting: Cardboard and boxboard may be mixed together. Remove windows from kraft or manila envelopes. Do not mix with high or low grade papers. NO wax coated cardboard.

Selection of #2 Plastic Bottles

High-density Polyethylene (#2 Plastic) Bottles & Jugs: Milk and juice bottles, detergent, shampoo bottles and similar narrow-neck bottles.  Look for the recycling symbol molded into the bottom of the bottle.

Preparation:  Remove all caps and neck rings.  Empty, rinse and drain. Crush or flatten. Labels are allowed.

Sorting: Color and clear plastic containers can be mixed.  No wide-mouth #2 plastics are accepted (yogurt, butter, etc.)

Tray of multi-colored bottles and jars

Glass Bottles and Jars:  All colors of non-returnable glass bottles and jars.

Preparation:  Remove (and recycle) all caps and lids. Empty, rinse and drain. Labels are allowed. No broken glass.

Sorting:  Color and clear glass may be mixed together.

Aluminum can

Metal Cans & Aluminum Foil Products: Tinned-steel cans and lids, all aluminum foil products, bottle and jar lids, and empty paint cans.

Preparation: Emptied, rinsed and drained. NO food residue. Remove lids from cans. Labels are allowed.

Sorting: Metals can be mixed together. A thin coat of dried paint is acceptable in paint cans.

Old Cell Phone

Cell Phones/Printer Cartridges: Inkjet/Laser cartridges of any time or brand or make.  Used cell phones of any type/brand/make.

Preparation: Empty cartridges. Cell phones must be intact.  No damaged cell phone or cartridges.

Sorting: Cell phones and Inkjet/Laser cartridges can be mixed.

University Park Outdoor Recycling Unit

University Park Family Housing

University Park has a single outdoor unit for recyclable collection, located at the corner of University Park Road and Massachusetts Street.

Students and their families living at University Park Family Housing are issued two blue curbside-recycling bins for their apartment for the collection of recyclables. Please contact GCI if you need a bin.

Make use of your dorm’s Resource Recovery Room! Sort & separate recyclables into the appropriately marked bins.

 

Offices
Recycling collection is available for all offices on campus. The major items are cardboard and paper, but metal, #2 plastic, ink cartridge and battery recycling are available!

Dining Services
Dining recycles several materials used in food storage and preparation. Dining also plays an integral role in the GCI Compost Project.

Greek Housing
On-call recycling pick-ups are available for all fraternity and sorority houses. Fraternities and sororities that have rooms in residence halls are encouraged to use the recycling room and other bins in their hall. Contact GCI for more information.
