Waste Disposal
Each residence hall room is provided a blue basket for recycling and a grey basket for waste. Every
residence hall has at least one recycling room and various recycling
bins throughout the building for recycling convenience. Students
are asked to place recyclables in the appropriately marked blue
or green bins.

Dumpsters
Dumpsters for trash and non-recyclables
are allocated for each residence hall for the convenience of
students. Students
are responsible for disposing of their own room trash in the
dumpsters.
To reduce the risk of infestation by insects
or rodents, dumpsters should be kept closed. Several locations now include zero sort dumpsters. All zero sort items such as cardboard, paper and plastic 1-7 can be placed in these.

Composting
Established in 1993, the Compost Project is a cooperative project of GCI,
Property Management, Dining Services, Facilities Management and the town
of Orono.
It is a multi-community effort to compost leaf
and yard trimmings from participating communities and pre-consumer
food waste generated by UMaine Dining Services. The Compost Project
is located off campus at a licensed facility in nearby Hudson.
Post-consumer waste from the dining commons
are being phased into the compost project as buildings are renovated.
Post-consumer waste includes all food left on diners’ plates
and other materials, such as meat, which is not compostable under
the current system.
Food scraps are passed into a pulper that removes
water and grinds up the waste into a consistency similar to coleslaw.
Grinding the food into small pieces aids the composting process
and saves water that otherwise goes down the drain and through
a garbage disposal with the food scraps. |
