Style & Décor
Of course you’re looking to create some cool digs for yourself
at college, but there are some things to keep in mind as you plan
your room makeover.
Connect with your roommate
to discuss how to decorate your shared space. This is a great way
to start getting to know each
other and taking time to plan together eliminates duplication of
furnishings and appliances. Talk about going in together on a Micro-Fridge® rental.
Do you want an area rug in your space? Do you want to go in on
a common theme or just do your own thing?

Painting
Residents may not paint any area of university housing facilities. Unauthorized painting will result in charges for repainting of the area.

Decorating Ideas
Keep in mind your dorm room will have limited space. Instead
of bringing all your cool belongings to school at once, think about packing
up
only a few things to display now and swap them out when you go
home for holiday break!

If
you enjoy colored lights for a festive look year-round, consider
selecting strings of LED lights which run cooler and reduce
electricity consumption. Don’t forget to unplug them during
the day and when
your room is unoccupied.
Check with the University Bookstore for hall-friendly products.

How
to Hang Items
Tape, paste, glue, nails, hooks, screws and tacks are not allowed
when hanging pictures, posters or other décor to residence
hall walls and ceilings. Damage to walls and the cost to spackle
and repaint the room will be charged
to the student responsible, so avoid the hassle. Check out Command™ Picture
hanging Strips by 3M, available in the University Bookstore and at most major
retailers. Command™ products are available as picture hanging
stips, hooks, spring clips, cord
clips, poster
strips and decorating
clips. Mounting and replacement strips also available.

Room Decor Rules
• Evacuation
plans must be displayed in each student room. If they are
missing, please contact Property Management at 207-581-4444
to have another copy made
and re-hung. Décor cannot cover or conceal these plans.
• Ceilings in all residence facilities, including rooms, suites, lounges, hallways
and lobbies must be free of combustible materials.
• Cloth wall hangings (tapestries) create fire code concerns and are limited
to one item on one wall, not to exceed four feet by six feet.
• Decorations or furnishings MUST NOT hinder means of exit. A minimum unobstructed
pathway of 28 inches is required for adequate emergency exiting. This specifically
includes windows and window areas that cannot be obstructed with chairs, electronic
devices, signs and other objects that impede quick exiting of the room/building.
• Decorations and other articles shall not be hung from or placed in position
so as to block sprinkler heads, fire alarm systems or smoke detectors. The
hanging of articles from sprinkler pipes is prohibited under state fire codes.
A minimum clearance of 18 inches is required around each sprinkler head.
• Only 1 sq. foot of paper on room doors is allowed.
• Antennae, aerials and other wiring are not allowed on the outside of any
residence facility.

Décor du Jour et
Aujourd'hui
The bed often doubles as a coffee table, couch, or study area and is the largest piece of furniture in most residence hall rooms, so it’s important to choose a comforter that reflects your style and won’t immediately show the dirt.
Think “Storage”
Residence hall room storage is at a premium. Invest in closet organizers for shoes, sweaters, accessories and toiletries to ensure that you can always find what you need, when you need it!
