Safety and Security

Students at Community Policing Center
Students, staff, faculty and guests all share in the responsibility of safety and security at the University of Maine.

Below are some quick facts and tips regarding safety measures for residents. Please see the links above for details on specific topics.

Building Safety & Security

Residents should always carry and never lend their University identification card (Maine Card), room PIN numbers, mailbox combinations or keys, to another person.

University employees should always display their name badge identification when visiting residence halls.

All residence halls are secured 24 hours per day, seven days per week.  Residents have 24/7 access to their own residence hall, and 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. access to other residence halls.

Residents should always lock their rooms, including the windows when not in the rooms.

Window screens in student rooms, corridors, hallways, stairways and lounge spaces should not be removed, except in an emergency.

Unauthorized presence on rooftops, window ledges, entry way overhangs and areas marked for restricted access (interior or exterior) in on-campus housing is prohibited.

When exiting on-campus housing through locked exterior doors, residents are responsible for leaving the doors locked. Residents are prohibited from “propping” doors open.

Department of Public Safety

The Department of Public Safety at the University of Maine is a full-service police department, staffed by state-certified police officers, security officers and support personnel. The training and professional standards met by UMaine’s officers are the same as those required in any municipality across the state.

Visit online for information on this department and how to report crimes: http://www.umaine.edu/publicsafety/
