Access to Campus Buildings

Most campus buildings and facilities are accessible to the campus community, guests and visitors during normal business hours, Monday through Friday.

Exterior doors to all student residence halls are controlled 24 hours a day and are accessible to resident students via the Persona access control system. This enables entry control by validation or denial of the cardholder.

Guests and visitors may gain admittance by calling a student living in the residence hall and being escorted by that individual.

Key Tag Registration Program

Lost keys present a security risk as well as a considerable expense in re-keying buildings. Students may visit Public Safety’s Community Policing Desk in the Memorial Union to complete a registration card and receive a registration key tag with a unique serial number.

Individuals who find keys with a serial tag are directed to contact Public Safety. The department then matches the serial number with the registered owner’s name, enabling the keys to be returned to the owner without disclosing the student’s location or identity.

ID Requirement for Vendors

Property Management requires all University employees, contractors and vendors to wear and display University identification when in residence halls. Residents should not provide building access to individuals claiming to be employees, contractors or vendors, but call Property Management, 581-4444 or Public Safety, 581-4040.

Electronic Alarm Systems

Exterior access doors for all residence halls are monitored by computer at Public Safety. Sensors attached to exterior doors are capable of signaling an alarm to police if doors are propped open. The police will respond and correct the situation.

A sophisticated computer-based electronic monitoring system, located at the Department of Public Safety building, also monitors a comprehensive network of panic, environmental, intrusion, robbery and fire alarms. See Police Call Boxes.

Keep Your Keys and MaineCard Safe

An easy, safe and inexpensive way to keep track of keys and your MaineCard ID is to use a lanyard.

Lanyards come in a variety of colors and styles and can be worn around the neck (as shown in the photo above), snapped on a belt loop or clipped inside a backpack.

Many styles of lanyards include protective plastic sleeves to hold your MaineCard ID so the magnetic strip is protected and your card is always close at hand for meals, laundry, the library and when entering your residence hall!

Interior Persona Access Controls

Access to individual rooms in the First Year Residence Halls is controlled via the Persona Card Swipe system.

Students must swipe a MaineCard and enter a pin number to access individual rooms.

Students should not share their access PIN code with others.
