Bio: Dr. Sarrantonio
received her B.S. degree in 1978 from the College of Mt. Saint
Vincent. She received her M.S. degree in 1981 and Ph.D. in 1987
from Cornell University. She joined the faculty in 1999 and is an
Associate Professor of Sustainable Agriculture.
Current Research:
My research is focused on
short-term nitrogen cycling and long-term soil
quality changes as affected by crop rotations, particularly those
including cover crops. I am currently looking at both N-cycling and
soil quality changes in a four year vegetable cropping study in
which the frequency, timing and species of cover crops varies
amongst treatments (collaborating with Dr. Eric Gallandt). I am also
looking at the relative contribution of roots and shoots of red
clover to soil parameters, depending on the length of time that
clover has been included in the cropping system. I will be
continuing to screen cover crop species and ecotypes for their
usefulness in different cropping system niches in Maine.
