Dr. Donglin Zhang

Research Area: Ornamental Horticultue

E-mail: donglin@maine.edu

Phone: 207-581-2918

Office: 108B Deering

Bio: Dr. Zhang received his B.A. (1983) and M.S. (1989) from Central South Forestry University.  He received his Ph.D. from the University of Georgia in 1998.  He joined the faculty in 1999 and is an Associate Professor of Ornamental Horticulture.

Current Research:

Landscape Horticulture Programs focus on ornamental and floricultural plants and their uses in landscape. The research can be classified into applied and basic research projects. Applied research deals with problems we face everyday on our ornamental and floricultural plant production, such as how to produce better and healthy plant materials for our gardens, effect of environmental factors on plant growth and flowerings, how to propagate the new and usual ornamental and native plants for our landscape, and etc. Basic research emphases the principals and application of modern techniques on ornamental plants, such as why does short-day induce flowering of Poinsettias, application of DNA markers and sequence on cultivar discrimination, and etc. Research activities include the studies at ornamental gardens, field research trials, nurseries, greenhouses, and laboratories. This research is carried out through the efforts of post-doctoral scientists, technicians, graduate students, and undergraduate student workers with collaboration of faculty from University of Maine and other national and international institutes. Funding for research is derived through the Maine Agricultural Experiment Station at the University of Maine, Maine and regional Green Industries, USDA, personal donations, and other sources. Graduate students are typically sought to assist in these studies and to develop their own research problem that compliments the existing program. Assistantship support is from departmental assistantships or from extramural funding.
