Location

The Child Study Center (CSC), located on Sebago Road, near the Maine Center for the Arts, operates a developmentally appropriate preschool. The CSC is open to children throughout the community.

About the Child Study Center

The Child Study Center offers a developmentally based curriculum of activities in art, dramatic play, language, music, science, gross-motor, and self-help skills. Each session is designed for children between 1 _ and 5 years of age, including children with special needs. A major goal of the program is to foster each child’s social, cognitive, and emotional growth, while establishing a positive self concept. Teachers interact with children in activities of varied structure and content on individual, small-group, and large-group bases.

Pre-academics Program

The Child Study Center provides structured, small group experiences in foundation skills, reading, mathematics and writing each day following free play. Activities are provided for 4 or 5 children and may include games of counting, letter matching, phonics, fine motor development or memory. The small group activities are designed to stimulate the enjoyment of learning, to foster growth in self confidence and to prepare children for entry into kindergarten and the more structured setting of the early primary grades. A new feature to the CSC is the introduction of Spanish Lessons to the children in each session.

The Facility

The school is housed in a one-story structure consisting of a colorful and inviting classroom, with an attached 12 X 36 sunroom. An observation booth with one-way mirrors into the classroom is available for parental use whenever the Center is open. There is a large fenced yard adjacent to the building containing a variety of developmentally appropriate and challenging playground equipment.
Examples of play and educational materials include computers, a children’s library, a variety of language and science games, blocks, puzzles, train and lego tables, as well as an extensive dramatic play center.

Staffing

The CSC is directed by 2 experienced teachers with extensive educational and instructional expertise. Both teachers received their Child Development degrees at the University of Maine. A child-teacher ratio of 4:1 is typically maintained through use of graduate and undergraduate students who are preparing for careers in early childhood development.

The Child Study Center offers two separate preschool sessions:

M-W-F mornings – 9:00 to 1:00
T-Th mornings – 9:00 to 12:00

An extended hours program allows "drop off" as early as 7:45 a.m. An additional fee is charged for extended hours. An option to attend 5 mornings a week is available.

The Child Study Center follows the University calendar. It is open for a 14-week session during both fall and spring semesters.
