Growth and Development in the Bangor , Maine , Area: Should We Be Concerned About Sprawl?

Authors: Jennifer Boothroyd

Abstract
Sustainable growth and development have received much attention over the past two decades. In our state, focus has centered predominantly on southern Maine. The greater Bangor region, however, has also been expanding, and a review of its current development trends may prove important in avoiding future problems. This project presents population, employment, and school enrollment census data from Bangor and the surrounding municipalities. The information is presented in a format based upon patterns of classic urban development. This descriptive-analytical study identifies development trends in the greater Bangor area and discusses the relative sustainability of growth in the region.
