Estimation of Physician Specialist Need

Abstract
This case study compares methods of estimating the number of physician
specialists needed to care for the patient population in a given market
(physician workforce study) and contrasts the relative strengths and weaknesses
of each. Although alternative methods attempt to incorporate local demographics,
geographic differences, and local health status information into the supply
assessment, the source of data for the demand assessment is different. This
analytic project determines the similarities and differences in each approach
to physician workforce planning and evaluates how these factors may influence
recommendations produced through each method of forecasting.
