The Department of Public Safety at The
University of Maine is a full-service police department, staffed by
state-certified police officers, security officers and support
personnel. The training and professional standards met by UMaine's
officers are the same as those required in any municipality across the
state.
Because of the unique nature of a
university community and the activities that take place in it, UMaine
police officers are "specialists". They are practitioners of a kind of
public safety work that makes them a vital and positive force in the
community that they serve and protect.
At UMaine, the Department of Public
Safety employs the principles of the community policing philosophy.
Based on communications, partnerships and collaborative problem solving,
community policing has proven to be highly effective.
