Community Service Corps
Welcome to the Community Service Corps
(CSC). The Department of Public Safety developed the CSC program in the
fall of 2002. Public Safety is committed to serving the UMaine
community. The CSC program is a partnership between the University
members and Public Safety in order to enrich the safety and security of
our University community.
Mission of the Community Service
Corps Program
The Community Service Corps Program is committed to making the
University a safe and crime free environment with student employees
assisting the Department of Public Safety in its service. For this
reason Community Service Corps members hold a unique position in our
University community. They are members of the student body and of the
Department of Public Safety. Not only is Public Safety out in the
community it serves, the community is with-in Public Safety. The CSC
uses this unique position as an opportunity to bring maximum safety and
security results to its community.
The Community Service Corps Program
accomplishes this mission by providing employment opportunities to
motivated students who are serious about Service, Campus Safety, and
Crime Prevention. These students are given the needed resources and
training to successfully accomplish their various tasks. The CSC
provides fair and equal treatment to all University community members by
making the University a safe place to live, work, and learn.
COMMUNITY SERVICE CORPS
In the Program, work-study students serve as Community Safety Assistants
(CSAs). CSAs have a desire to serve their community and actively
contribute to the safety and well-being of those living and learning
here.
Community Safety Assistants have many responsibilities. They work
closely with the Public Safety Security Division to supplement the
personal and building security provided.
- Working in Security Patrol,
CSAs check to assure that doors are locked, perform building patrols,
and other vital duties. They also work with our Community Policing
division.
- In the role of Community Patrol,
CSAs assist by performing emergency callbox checks, building patrols,
and nightly escorts among other duties. In addition, they work at the
- Community Service Desk, where
temporary parking permits are issued, directions and information are
offered, and other tasks to aid our Communications Officers are
performed. The duties of Community Safety Assistants will change and
evolve as the Community Service Corps program continues to develop and
expand its services.
SUPERVISION
A Graduate Assistant Coordinator dedicated to provide student members
with leadership, support, and guidance supervises the CSC. However the
program is a cooperative effort with all Public Safety command staff and
officers partnered with students to provide vital training and guidance.
TRAINING
The members of Public Safety recognize the important role of the CSC.
Public Safety provides Community Safety Assistants with in-depth
training to help them learn how to perform their duties and
responsibilities in a professional, effective, and efficient manner. All
new student members participate in foundational training such as a
Departmental overview, First Aid/CPR training, and a Crisis Management
course.
In addition, CSAs receive on-the-job
training in the three areas of work they participate in. Security,
Community Policing, and Communications Officers work together with the
CSC Coordinator to provide task specific training. Community Safety
Assistants receive instruction, demonstration, and assessment in the
duties of the CSC positions. Public Safety properly equips students with
the necessary knowledge and skills of their work.
Training emphasis is on the development
of competent, capable, and successful student members. Skills and
experience gained from CSC employment will benefit future endeavors in
all career avenues.
Vision of the Community Service
Corps
The Community Service Corps Program is committed to providing lifelong
skills through learning and leadership opportunities. Together with the
Department of Public Safety, we encourage personal growth by offering
continuous support and guidance for all Community Service Corps members.
The success of the program focuses on three areas: training,
supervision, and adequate staffing for all University community efforts.
Since these three areas are critical to the program's ability to achieve
excellence, we will actively pursue strategies for continuous
improvement in each area.
A Message to our Community
The CSC is comprised of work-study students. However, all members of our
community have a significant responsibility; serving as our eyes and
ears, recognizing and reporting suspicious, illegal, or unauthorized
activity on our campus. In this role, University residents become
critical to the safety and security of the members of our community
since they know best who or what looks out of place.
You are welcome to drop by the UMaine
Department of Public Safety station any time to speak with a Community
Service Corps or Public Safety member about information you feel
important to share. You may also speak with a Communications Officer 24
hours/day, 7 days/week at 581-4040.
The Public Safety web page also
contains a "Campus Eyes"
section where anonymous information may be given.
Thank you for your help in our efforts
to serve this community in increasingly better ways.
