October is National Crime Prevention Month

The University of Maine Department of Public Safety would like to remind you of a few crime prevention and personal safety tips:

• Always lock your residence door, regardless of how long you plan to be gone.
• Never open your door until you know who is there.
• Do not leave personal items unattended -- anywhere!
• Walk in groups or with a friend whenever possible, especially at night. call 581-WALK for an on-campus escort if needed.
• Use well-lighted and well-traveled routes when walking.
• Know the locations of the emergency callboxes (blue light phones).
• Be suspicious of unknown persons loitering or checking doors in your resident hall.
• Be cautious about sharing personal information with anyone.
• Watch your drink, do not trust anyone else to watch it for you.
• Don't drink from punch bowls.
• Don't accept free drinks from strangers.
• Watch out for your friends at social events.
• Always lock your car and take your keys with you.
• Store valuables out of sight in your car.
• Lock your bicycle or lose it!
