Sustainable Sites

The retention pond assists in mitigating the stormwater runoff and the building’s white roof is designed to reduce heat island effect.

A building’s location and design can impact the local environment.  The site selection and designing of the Recreation Center worked together to minimize the impact on the local environment.

Sustainable Site Strategies:

  • Light pollution Reduction – Site light pollution is minimal because of lighting design and the selection of appropriate outdoor lighting fixtures.

  • Alternative transportation – Bicycle racks are provided and two designated BAT bus routes stop at the Recreation center to encourage alternative travel modes.

  • Development foot print – The north and west borders of the building are dedicated open space that protects the forest and trails that connect to the building.

The UMaine Student Recreation and Fitness Center meets or exceeds these LEED qualifications.
