Michael Socolow, Assistant
Professor of Journalism: "My general observations are, in terms of
what we're seeing here in America, it's been pretty good on NBC from
a sports perspective, but from a journalism perspective, I don't
think we're getting the whole story about what's going on in China.
The Chinese government has gone to an enormous extent to control the
message that's getting out, but they haven't been 100 percent secure
in it. For instance, we've read about this lip syncing in the
opening ceremony. The fireworks also in the opening ceremony were
found out to be staged, essentially. But opening ceremonies are like
that. I think the Chinese are taking it to an extent that we've
never before seen. I don't think previous opening ceremonies were
ever choreographed technologically the way this one is. They were
beautiful opening ceremonies--I remember the Barcelona one was just
amazing--but it didn't have that technological boost that we saw in
the Chinese one."
