Info for ParentsExchanging
information about your students
- No one knows your student as well as
their family. Information about your student that will help us
to help your student is welcome.
- The
Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act provides
limits to the information we can provide to you about your
students without his or her express consent.
Relationship between Students and
Residence Life
- Our focus is with the student. There
are compelling educational reasons that college students should
be treated as adults (see The Book of Professional Standards for
Higher Education, T. K. Miller, Editor, 2001), and sometimes
that might feel that we are excluding the parents and their
legitimate concerns.
- One excellent title to explain the
institutional perspective on this and providing some tips for
parents is
"Letting Go".
-
The
C.A.M.P.U.S. Experience describes our plan, our
philosophy, and our mission statement for helping students who
live in the residence halls at Maine to succeed.

- Alleged violations of Residents
Manual or Student Handbook policy can result in a
Judicial Referral to the Office of Community Standards,
Rights and Responsibilities (OCSRR).
- working in conjunction with OCSRR,
one of the sanctions available to the university is a Housing
Status Review. When the safety of students has been compromised
by the behavior(s) of a student, one option for professional
staff in the University is to void the Housing Agreement and
evict students who have violated policy. While eviction is a the
most severe outcome, it is much more common for students to be
moved to another hall.

Campus Security Report
provides information about the numbers of certain crimes
collected through all University agencies, and in some cases
include crimes reported to the Orono and Old Town Police
departments as required by the Jeanne Cleary Disclosure of

- Federal law, through the Higher
Education Amendments of 1998, permits educational institutions

guardians of students under the age of 21 when the student has
been found responsible for any second drug or alcohol related
offense.
