Community
Our communities promote citizenship, a sense of belonging,
safety, and fun. Residence Life staff intentionally encourage the
formation of inclusive, scholarly communities where students feel
a connection to their respective hall and the larger UMaine
campus. Residential communities are based on shared academic
programs, personal interest and lifestyle preferences. Active
participation in communities supports self-exploration and expands
perspectives.
Academic Achievement
The residential community is an environment that supports
learning and recognizes academic excellence as a priority.
Departmental resources and programs teach and model academic
success. Opportunities for scholarship in the halls and villages
are enhanced through collaboration with faculty and academic
deans.
Multiculturalism
Multiculturalism recognizes and respects the perspectives and
traditions of cultures and embraces differences in the community
to promote understanding. Residence Life facilitates,
understanding, respect, and inclusion of all members of our
communities. Increasing awareness and knowledge of diversity
issues enriches the individual and the community.
Programs that engage
Programs are purposeful interventions and are designed to
engage students in their own learning and personal development.
Students' needs and interests inform the programming opportunities
offered by Residence Life staff. Engaging programs provide
awareness, experience, and transferable knowledge and skills,
designed to improve the individual’s collegiate experience.
University Connections
The residential experience provides a convenient personalized
connection between each resident’s interests and needs and
university resources and programs. Knowledgeable and involved
Residence Life staff introduce residents to the large variety of
university services, activities and programs. Resident students
are provided many opportunities to get involved and participate in
a dynamic campus life.
Safety and Civility
Residents should be safe from violence, threats of violence,
and harassing, intimidating, or emotionally hostile acts. Safety
and security in the residence environment enables students to
pursue personal and academic goals. Residence Life provides the
resources, policies and support that advance students' safety and
encourages responsible care for others in their community. We
expect members and visitors to respect the rights of others,
including the right to a safe and secure community.
