President's Report
Bina Gupta
University of Missouri-Columbia
April 2000
I am happy to report that as we have entered into 2000, the Society has never been in better shape. Our membership has been strengthened over the last year, and I have been engaged in establishing new connections with kindred organizations around the world that look very promising.
What follows is news concerning those Society activities that have taken
place since the last issue of this newsletter, as well as announcements
concerning current and planned activities. Consider this your call to participate
in what promises to be another exciting year for the SACP!
The results of our December officer elections have been determined. Doug Allen, philosophy chair at the University of Maine, is now serving as our new vice president. In accordance with Society bylaws, he will serve in this capacity for a year, and assume office as SACP president in mid-January, 2001.
Marthe Chandler, professor of philosophy at DePauw University, has been elected to the one-year Board position.
I welcome both of these individuals on behalf of SACP.
If you have not yet renewed your Society membership for 2000, please do so by . Forms are available here.
As you may know, the SACP traditionally holds panels in conjunction with the APA (Eastern, Pacific, and Central Divisions), AAS and AAR annual meetings. The goal of these panels is to provide a forum for all scholars engaged in teaching and research in Asian and comparative philosophy. These organizations have absolute deadlines for submission of SACP information from our Program Committee chair, so it is in your best interest to plan aheadó not only to ensure that your panel information appears in the official conference program, but also that you have enough time to secure necessary funding.
The last SACP business meeting was held on the evening of Nov. 27, 1999 after our panel at the American Academy Religion meeting in Boston. I updated those present on the progress weíve made on our autumn research conference (see below), and secretary-treasurer J.N. Mohanty apprised us of the Societyís current financial situation.
There was some discussion about holding SACP panels in conjunction with
the Society for Phenomenology and Existentialism Society. If you favor
this idea, feel free to contact me.
There are two SACP positions open for election this falló the position of Secretary-Treasurer, currently held by Mohanty, and the two-year Board position currently held by Frank Hoffman. I hereby call for nominations for these positions.
Any member in good standing with the Society may be nominated. Before nominating another member, please confirm with your nominee that s/he is willing to serve.
Please send your nominations
to me by August 1, 2000.
The Society for Asian and Comparative Philosophy will hold its international research conference Sept. 28- Oct. 1 in Columbia, MO. I would like to extend to each of you an invitation to participate in this event, which will provide a rather unique opportunity to interact with philosophers from the U.S.óincluding Rudy Makkreel, David Carr, Tom Rockmore and Joseph Margolisóas well as the U.K., Australia, Canada and India.
One of the highlights of the conference will be two sessions on J. N. Mohantyís work: an "Author Meets His Critics" session concerning his book, Phenomenology between Essentialism and Transcendental Philosophy, and a general panel on Mohanty's philosophy.
The theme of the conference is "Time and History: East and West." Please note that the papers and panels are also welcome on topics other than the "Time and History" theme. Although the deadline for registration has passed, we can still accept individual and panel proposals. Student panels are especially encouraged.
If you are interested in participating, please contact me immediately
by email, to be followed by the necessary paperwork.
Indian Philosophical Congress Platinum Jubilee Celebrations
The Indian Council of Philosophical Research is planning to hold its
Platinum Jubilee conference in Delhi, India next winter. The dates are
Dec. 28, 2000- Jan. 1, 2001. SACP members have been invited to participate
in this event. Conference details are included elsewhere on this site.
I have received excellent comments about the SACP web site. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Melanie Johnson-Moxley, who has not only spent countless hours in maintaining the web site, but has also assisted me in various other SACP-related activities.
I would also like to thank John Holder, our SACP program chair, who assumed office under very difficult circumstances and has since given his time, effort and energy to the activities related to SACP programming.
I want to hear from youóplease feel free to get in touch with me to
discuss your interests, questions and concerns regarding the SACP. Your
involvement is crucial to the success of our Society. I can be reached
by email at guptab@missouri.edu, or by other means posted elsewhere in
this newsletter.
