About This Organization

The SACP was established in 1967 as a non-profit organization aimed at advancing the development of the disciplines of Asian and comparative philosophy in the international academic arena, and bringing together Asian and Western philosophers for a mutually beneficial exchange of ideas.

The Society seeks to provide the same sort of professional outlet for philosophers doing work in non-Western areas of philosophy as the American Philosophical Association (APA) provides for their counterparts in Western thought. The group serves as the largest and most well-known professional organization for scholars in the fields of Asian, Indian, and comparative philosophy. It holds panels in conjunction with the APA, the Association of Asian Studies (AAS), and the American Academy of Religion (AAR).

The SACP organizes regional conferences in Asia, Australia, and Europe, and the United States in cooperation with local philosophical associations-- among such recent events have been the International Meeting of the Society for Asian and Comparative Philosophy, held in Bhubaneswar, Orissa, India, January 4-7, 1999 at Utkal University. The next SACP International Research Conference (an event held just once every three years) will be held Sept. 28- Oct. 1, 2000 at the Holiday Inn Executive Center in Columbia, Missouri, U.S.A. [See conference details here.]

The Society publishes the SACP Forum biannually under the editorship of Michael Barnhart at Kingsborough/CUNY. The purpose of this publication is to serve the professional interests of scholars in Asian and comparative philosophy by providing information related to seminars, conferences, research collaboration, available grants, calls for papers, etc. This publication is principally funded through annual membership dues.

Philosophy East and West: A Quarterly of Comparative Philosophy (edited by Roger T. Ames at the University of Hawai'i) is the journal of the Society for Asian and Comparative Philosophy. Subscriptions for members are available for $26 (individual, U.S., regular mail). The Society also sponsors a monograph series on specialized topics published by the University of Hawai'i Press.

Annual individual membership dues for the SACP are $20 ($8 for students and professors emeriti) and include a subscription to the SACP Forum. Individual membership, as well as a regular one-year subscription to Philosophy East and West,is $46 ($23 for students). Retrieve the Member Application and Journal Subscription Form here.
