Responder Description
As detailed in the policy, the workplace response includes the development of a network of informal responders trained to make appropriate referrals. Responders serve as a key mechanism by which the university will “create a supportive workplace environment in which employees feel comfortable discussing relationship abuse issues and seeking assistance for relationship abuse situations.”
Individuals who elect to serve in this role will receive specialized training to handle disclosures of relationship abuse, make referrals, assess risk, and facilitate workplace safety planning. Responders will not serve as counselors; rather, in consultation with the Coordinator of the Safe Campus Project, they will serve as a resource and referral agent.
Duties:
- Participate in 3+ hours training on how to handle disclosures, make referrals, conduct risk assessment, and facilitate safety planning before assuming role as Responder. Participate in ongoing training to maintain and/or further develop skills.
- Responders will receive inquiries from employees who identify as victims, abusers, or concerned colleagues, and will make referrals to existing resources and thus facilitate access to them in a way that is appropriate considering the complexities of relationship abuse .
- Maintain necessary/expected documentation.
- Consult as expected and appropriate with Coordinator of Safe Campus Project.
