Service Learning is an integral part of an academic course taken
for credit and a grade. The University of Maine defines
service-learning as follows:
"Service learning is a form of experiential education
characterized by student participation in an organized
service activity
that is connected to specific learning outcomes, meets
identified community needs and provides structured time
for student
reflection and connection of the service experience to
learning."
The Leadership Team
The service-learning leadership team provides support and
oversight for service-learning initiatives at the University.
The Method
Service-learning is a teaching method which combines community
service with academic instruction as it focuses on critical,
reflective thinking and civic responsibility. Service-learning
programs involve students in organized community service
that addresses local needs, while developing their academic
skills, sense of civic responsibility, and commitment to
the community.
