In classes at the third year level (the previous
205 and 206), students have developed their speaking and
writing skills through SL projects of the following types:
-
Grammar or cultural presentations in Spanish classes at
area high schools (Orono, Belfast, Bangor, Old Town)
-
Creation of language games with rules, playing board,
and other materials, which were donated to various classrooms
at middle and high school levels
-
Musical performance in Spanish (piano accompaniment and
songs) at Old Town home for the elderly
-
YMCA cooking class in Spanish with both language and
cultural content
-
Child Development Center introduction to Spanish for
pre-schoolers
In SPA 458, Latin American Civilization, students also
did projects on a country at an area school of their
choice (Milford, Dover-Foxcroft, Stillwater Montessori,
in addition to those mentioned previously). Topics included:
-
Facts and features of Ecuador
-
Introduction to Peruvian culture for primary level students
-
Argentine Spanish (Voseo)
-
Conservation measures in Costa Rica
The
service projects for each course constitute from 20
to 30% of the total grade. Aspects of the projects
include:
-
preparation of drafts (ongoing reporting
of project development for instructor assessment, correction
and general feedback)
-
brief class description (prior
to completion of the service)
-
the actual service work
with community partner
-
class presentation of the project
experience and submission of written text of material
used
-
reflective essay on what each student learned
from the preparation and execution
of SL projects, both
in the linguistic and the cultural
sense.
SL projects in Spanish for Spring 2003:
SPA 204 (second semester intermediate) students will do
two classroom skits and at least one language lesson. These
materials will be compiled and, where appropriate, filmed.
The material will be archived on CDs.
SPA 306 (Workshop in Speaking & Writing Spanish; formerly
206 Conversation & Composition) Students will do two
lessons, a minimum of one focused on linguistic structures.
Each student will be responsible for digitally recording
an interview with a native speaker and submitting it along
with commentary. The entire class will also develop a readers'
theater production as a group project and this performance
will be filmed. All these assignments will be archived on
CDs and donated to schools upon request.
SPA 490/597 Spanish Civilization students will develop
a cultural module and a virtual “tour” of some
part of Spain. This material will also be made available
to Spanish classes and will be done with a didactic approach.
Where possible, assignments throughout the semester in
all of these classes will be compiled and the content made
available for K-12 Spanish instruction. Assignments may include
the design of a Spanish Bowl competition, bookmarks, posters,
and other visuals for the promotion of language study, student
tips for developing fluency in Spanish, and more. For all
materials, the guidelines of the Maine Learning Results for
Modern Languages & Classics will be kept in mind and
those activities geared to a specific level or learning criterion
will be identified as such to further assist K-12 teachers
in identifying useful content.
