Computer Applications Lab
The UMaine Industrial Computer Applications Laboratory
The Industrial Computer Applications Laboratory is
administered, staffed, and maintained by Engineering Technology
faculty, staff, and students. The Lab consists of twenty
pentium-based computers and printing and plotting facilities. The lab
provides to students use of industrial quality software in the areas of
CADD, computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) and computer numerical control
(CNC) of manufacturing machine tools, construction management, and
engineering computations.
Lab use in not restricted to Engineering Technology students, but use is limited
by the technical focus of the software installed on the machines. CAD programs,
such as MicroStation are installed, as well as
ALGOR, a PC-based finite-element program. No word processing is allowed in
the lab, but students may use:
- Excel
- Word
- Visual Basic
- Timberline
- Primavera
- MathCad
-
MillSim
- Lathesim
- TK Solver
for their homework, projects, and lab reports.

Optical Design of a Laser Measurement System

AutoCad was used to design the optical path of a laser beam is the force head of the UMaine Nanotribometer,
shown in the photograph on the left.
The laser beam is used to measure the deflections of a small cantilever as shown
in the schematic on the right.
