Alumni Hearsay
We always enjoy hearing from alumni. Please drop Knud
Hermansen a note to let CMT faculty and other alumni know
what you are doing.
The hearsay is listed in
the order it was heard, not necessarily the order that the
events occurred.

of "Finals Engineer" with
the Construction Section. He is now working out of the central office of
VTrans in Montpelier, Vermont. It is about a 30 to 45 minute commute from
the Burlington area. This position is more of an in-house office position,
a change from the field environment he has been working in for the past few
years. He is involved with reviewing or "finaling" AOT construction
projects (checking documentation, calculations, quantities, record plans,
etc.) as they are completed and come to the central office for
final payment. He is also involved with project claims (from
and to contractors) and actively involved with Site Manager®, our
AASHTO Trns*Port Construction Management Software. He recently came back
from a national TEA/TUG Conference on this software system hosted
by Alabama DOT in Mobile, AL. He has a small staff that help him. If he can offer
one word of advice to all the CMT alumni out there working, it word be "Documentation." He
can't stress enough how important it is to have good project documentation.
He remembers both Chuck and Knud emphasizing it's importance.
Adam Lawson (2003)
is still with Shawmut Design and Construction, now as an Assistant Project
Manager (APM). Currently he has two projects, a PF Chang and a Tahari retail
store, that he is about to turn over in Atlantic City, NJ in the Tropicana.
Next on the list is a Hard Rock Café in Manhattan, a PF Chang's
in St. Louis, and a Tiffany's Jewelry store in New York. Since becoming
an APM he has worked mostly with PF Chang's, a negotiated client, building
approximately 10-15 units a year. His responsibilities include RFI's, submittals,
change orders, scheduling, purchase orders, invoices (client and sub),
legal riders (contracts and buy-out), cost to complete (CTC's), and all
aspects of warranty work associated with the projects. In addition to his
duties at the office, he is now an executive member of the YCC (Young Contractor's
Council), which is associated with the Massachusetts AGC. This has been
a rewarding experience for him and has given him more perspective into
the construction industry in this state. He got engaged August 20th to
his long time girlfriend Karen Estey. They have planned the wedding on
August 20th 2005. She has recently moved down to Massachusetts (after graduating
from grad school at UMO) and is employed as a speech language pathologist.
Andrew Forst (1999) is a project engineer
at Skanska USA Building. He started working with Sordoni Skanska as a Project
Engineer in Parsippany, NJ in June of 1999 in the estimating department.
The company modified its name a few times before ending up with Skanska USA
Building. He completed four years of estimating and was finally assigned
to a field job in June of 2003. It was a design build project of a 410,000
sf parts distribution center for Mercedes-Benz in Robbinsville, NJ (outside
of Trenton, NJ). This was completed in June of 2004. He is currently assigned
to a project in Suffern, NY in June 2004 for Avon (cosmetics company). His
company is building their new global research and development building.
Michael A. Connolly (2002) landed a career
position with the Coast Guard, Industrial Service Division. He survived a
month of intensive panel interview(s) and background checks. He felt like
he was working for Donald Trump. One of his first days on the job he was
sent out on the road (and high seas) to check out the projects underway.
He left S. Portland in a new government issue F-250 Super Duty with a V-10
under the hood. His job was to restore light houses that went to the Island
Institute Organization 10 years ago. He says that he finally found an organization
worthy of his effort, sweat, and skills. He utilized all he has learned in
the field and college, a competitive combination, thanks to CMT. His office
will be designing a new ship docking system soon and plans on utilizing the
very best of everything. Mike is a former sea urchin diver and is very familiar
with boating regulations and the Maine coast.
Ryan Russell (2004) is currently in Kabul,
Afghanistan working with Perini Corp. in the PMSI division. He is currently
working under a CENTCOM contract under the Army Corps of Engineers building
bases for the Afghan National Army. He is in Kabul at the main office waiting
to mobilize on the job site located in Gardez, which is approximately two
hours south of the capital, Kabul. The contract is a full design-build that
includes a power station, waste water treatment, barracks, recreation field
and 50 bed hospital. His position on the project is as one of the engineers
in the field. Right now the main concern is building temporary living quarters
and security. He cannot complain about the pay. He is well taken care of.
The first 80k is tax free and then the tax after that is as though it were
your only income, so the taxes are very, very low. In this area of the world
the politcal arena is begining to heat up. Last night, there was a car bomb
about four blocks from his house. Unfortunately, the bomb killed seven people
including two Americans. The Taliban is really starting to make their presence
felt again because there will be national elections in October. Down the
road, Perini will more than likely be looking for more people to come overseas.
Ryan says this project might be something for some of the graduates to think
about.
Pete Parizo (2002)
is working at Sargent & Sargent,
coordinating surveying. He constantly runs into CMT grads out in the field. Glenn
Adams (2004) recently
took a job with Sargent & Sargent and has fallen into the role of Pete's
partner in the surveying/layout department. He has made the transition from
college student to full time contributing member of society nicely. Pete
ran into Mike Giles (2002) at Colby College
in Waterville . Sargent & Sargent is building a new multi purpose turf
sports field and Mike's with H.E. Sargent working on the "Colby Green" project.
Sargent & Sargent is also reconstructing the Belfast airport runway under
the supervision of Dufresne-Henry (Portland, Presque Isle). Spencer
Maynard (2003) works with this firm. On a personal
note, he recently married his best friend, Marci, and purchased a home in
Bangor. Marci aspires to be a psychologist and Pete aspires to retire from
construction at the age of 30 and play golf professionally.
Spencer Maynard (2003) has
been doing a lot of survey work the past few weeks. His company recently
acquired a new SET530R Sokkia Total Station with an Allegro CE data collector.
He has worked as far north as Frenchville and plans to head to Houlton for
more survey work. Most of his work is traversing and topography. He has also
been working in the office performing project design. In the near past he
has completed engineering estimates, quanitity take-offs, grading and construction
inspections. He is using AutoDesk Land Desktop (AutoCAD) quite frequently.
His daughter is seven years old now and she starts 2nd grade this year. Spencer
is very proud of her.
Chad Merritt (1998) just started his new
job at Consigli Construction Co.

the past 7 month Kinetics/Maine has performed over $5million worth of installation.
It is currently working on a $4million dollar expansion with hopes to perform
another $1-2million worth of work in the next 4-6 months.
Matt Hebert (2002) is an estimator with
Cianbro. He has been working on an estimate for a rehab of a bascule bridge
in St. Augustine Florida. Its the Bridge of Lions with several websites discussing
the bridge. The project is full of different tricks and challenges. It's
on the national historic register. The engineer's estimate is around $60
million.
Spencer Maynard (2003) has
been doing quantity take-offs. He has also been working on hydrology and
hydraulics for stormwater permitting . HydroCAD and AutoCAD are the computer
programs he uses besides the basic Microsoft programs. His firm recently
landed a Big Rock Ski Mountain job in Mars Hill, Maine.
David Hosking (1996) is currently working
for the Vermont Agency of Transportation as a Resident Engineer in their
Construction Division. The project that he assigned to is an $11 million
dollar urban reconstruction project for a 1 mile section of US Route 7 in
South Burlington, Vermont. The General Contractor is Paragon Construction,
Inc. out of Orford, New Hampshire. Traffic count is around 26,000 vehicles
per day. Trying to proceed with work without affecting traffic too much is
a major effort. The VAT is going to advertise the next 2 mile segment of
this project this Spring. That segment will be in the $10 to $15 million
range. This is big dollars and a big project for this area. Contract completion
date for segment 1 is Oct 2004, although it will likely be Summer 2005. Segment
2 looks to be done on paper by late 2006. Check out David's project website
[http://www.us7shelburneroad.com] for more information on the project.
Ryan Labreque (2002)
has been assigned full time (as of 2/1/04) to a new project which should
be very interesting. He
is part of the construction of a $70 million Life Science Building for Brown
University in downtown Providence. The project has been delayed for
a few years due to the surrounding neighbors/businesses and the resulting
extensive litigation. The project is finally under way in the shoring
/ excavation / blasting stages. He should be there for a few years as the
scheduled completion date is January of 2006. Currently he is in an
engineering role (swimming in paper) but hopes to get some time out on site
performing superintendent functions over the course of the project. It
is just not dirty enough in the site office.
Travis Whitehead (2003) graduated from the CMT program
in May of 2003. Right around this time last year he started sending out resumes
and doing interviews. By March he had three job offers with four interviews.

months as a project/site engineer for Cianbro at the MeadWestvaco Paper Mill
in Rumford. Last week he began a new assignment working in the estimating
department in Pittsfield. He says there is a big difference in trying to
estimate a small job for a private client that the company can negotiate
with versus a large bridge project for a state DOT. At the moment he's on
the estimating team that is estimating the new Waldo/Hancock bridge in Bucksport.
He found a new place to live in Pittsfield. He is hoping to be able to find
and buy a house next year.
Cecil "Buddy" Kershner (2001)
is working on the EMH office building in Brewer. He's also trying to get
his house he's building closed in before Winter.
Spencer Maynard (2003) is working on the
Belfast Airport doing some stormwater drainage design for a runway project.
He has also done some drainage design and profiling for ledge designation
under existing grades for the Rockland Airport runway project. He is using
autocad and hydrocad every now and then. He's also been doing a lot of surveying.
John Phillips (2003)
is working for Reed& Reed
as a field engineer. He has been working in Augusta on the new Route 3 bridge
over the Kennebec. It's a great first project: $10 million curved girder
bridge, over 1000 feet long, and 100 ft in the air. John is responsible for
all the day-to-day layout on the bridge. There's a great picture of the job
on the company website reed-reed.com (go to company news link and Augusta
bridge).
John "Scotty" Linscott IV (2003)
is working for H.B. Fleming. His first project was a small bridge job in
Harpswell. He has been estimating, designing and coordinating details for
projects. He has been working with the partner on a product and construction
procedure called a soil anchor. He has also been flying from time to time.
Christine Webber (2003) is working at
Pike Industries in Portland. She spent half the Summer being trained in estimating
and project management. She is now a project manager on Congress Street.
Tom Carey (2003) is currently working
at Wright-Ryan Construction in Portland. His position is project engineer.
He thinks it is a great company. Project Engineers work with the same project
manager. The project engineers stick to the projects their project managers
are working on. Tom runs the submittal process using Expedition, updates
the schedules (Suretrak) for the projects, and also does shop drawing review.
Other duties include soliciting quotes for various items and scopes of work,
draft RFIs, and prepares purchase orders and subcontract agreements. He says
that Adam Roy (2003) is still in Connecticut, Adam
Lawson (2003) is still in Boston, and Ian McCarthy (2003)
is still working for Sargent & Sargent. Last time he spoke with Ian he
had been promoted to Project Manager.
Ron Milley (2000) continues employment
at Granger Northern. He just completed a 350 space parking garage in Lewiston.
Presently both Ron and Dustin Littlefield (2001)
are working on a 1200 space garage for the University of Southern Maine in
Portland off 295. It is scheduled to be completed in January 2004.
Ben MacDonald (2002) is working for Wright-Ryan
Construction. (Tom Carey (2003) also works at
Wright-Ryan.) Ben lives in Portland. For those that know Ben, you'll be shocked
to learn that he is engaged to get married in July 2004. His fiancee is smart
and beautiful. (Ben's friends question her common sense.)
Welcome to the 2007 alumni class
(and some that will be in the class of 2008, 2009, etc.)
Spencer Maynard (2003) has been surveying
during the past few weeks at the Belfast airport. He has recently examined
some inverts on the Belfast airport for stormwater analysis. He has also
performed some hydrology, construction and permitting issues with the D.E.P.
In the future he is going to be working on as-built drawings for a Rockland
project that was just completed. He is learing how to use AutoCAD and HydroCAD.
Spencer reports that his daugther recently started first grade and is proud
of her progress. P.S. He is still doing all of Travis' work and letting Travis
get the credit.
David Triggiani (1999) is still working
with Neill and Gunter, Inc., Design and Consulting Engineers out of Scarborough,
ME. He has responsibilities that include project technician as well as a
handful of projects to manage on his own. Three of the four projects are
now complete and came in under budget and ahead of schedule. (He attributes
his success to the wonderful teaching staff in the CMT department.) He has
been deemed the scheduler for the company as well as the estimator using
Primavera P3, Suretrack, and Timberline Estimating respectively. Neill and
Gunter has adopted the use of an internet based web site to collaborate with
the clients more effectively. The software is called Buzzsaw and put out
by Autodesk. He has been traveling around to major client sites establishing
relations as well as creating master schedules, reviewing capitol cost estimates
and setting up the guidlines for project controls. David is still involved
with real estate. He's purchased another apartment building and is busy renovating
an apartment for himself as well as another one in the building. Between
work and tenants there isn't a whole lot of time for anything else!!!
Cory Verrill (2000) and his wife have
purchased a house in Stetson, ME. She has started her new job at UMaine's
Pulp and Paper Research Center. Cory is still working at MIT and projected
to leave at the end of the month. Right now he works five days in Cambridge
and drives home for the weekends. Jacobs currently has no openings but is
trying to find the right project to transfer me to. He is searching for a
job in the Bangor area and hoping to stay with Jacobs.
Tom Perkins (1996) is working in Boston
at the convention center. He is now next in line to be General Superintendent
in charge of six other area superintendents. The convention center job will
wrap up early next summer, provided the architects can pick the right shade
of white to paint on the walls. Who knew there were so many shades of white?
His company has painted the walls so many times there is more latex than
gypsum now. Oh and incidentally, he says there will be plenty of billable
hours for legal
types when this job is over.
Aaron Cianchette (2001) is a short timer
in Florida. He is still on the Hathaway Bridge in Panama City, Florida, but
only for two more weeks. He is taking a transfer to New York City and should
start work on the 6th of October. He will be a superintendent. He will be
assigned to a project for the short term to get accustomed to the system.
With the next successful bid, he'll go to that job and start from scratch.
He visited a few of the jobs about six weeks ago up in New York. His company
currently has nine jobs going in the metro area. He saw Ryan Maheux (2002)
on the Howland Hook Marine Terminal project on Staten Island. Ryan seems
to be doing well. The accomplishment he is most proud of over the past year
is that he passed his written and practical exam and is now a licensed crane
operator (National Commission Certification of Crane Operators). He is not
actually an operator, but he can make picks and do lift plans. He does run
a rig now and then if they are in a bind. On the personal front, he got engaged
in June. His fiancee's name is Tonya. She is originally from Canada. They
met in Florida. She is an account manager for a medical testing laboratory,
but will be getting a new job in a different field in New York. She may work
for the Republican National Convention in the media relations area, but if
that doesn't pan out, she's going in to real estate. They will be married
in Maine next June.
Pete Parizo (2002)
is doing layout/surveying for Sargent & Sargent and living in Bangor.
He oversees GPS dozers that run off of sitevision systems and the Volvo
grader that operates hydraulically using a Trimble ATS 600 robotic total
station. He has worked on several interesting projects in the last year
including: Walmart in Brewer, Target in Bangor, Eastern Maine Health Care
in Brewer, runway improvements on the Portland Jetport, Crosby Manor Estates
townhouses in Belfast, artificial turf fields at Hampden Academy and Husson
College, 2 cells at PineTree Landfill in Hampden, waterline improvements
in Milo, street improvements on Railroad Street in Bangor, intersection
improvements on Wilson Street in Brewer, etc.
Matthew Richard (2003) After only a few
months working for Fusco, Matt reports he is responsible for submittals,
RFI's, meeting minutes, Union minority requirement reporting, some problem
solving in the field, SBI (small business ignitiative) requirement reporting,
and a little scheduling. He interacts directly with the architects, subcontractors,
and various consultants. He even sits in on the City of New Haven's project
planning meetings. He reports it has been a great experience thus far. Fusco
works exclusively in Connecticut, so not much traveling is required.

Louis Vuitton renovation in New York at the flagship store. It was a four
floor renovation worth over 10 million dollars. He has also been working
on CPK's California Pizza Kitchen. Shawmut will typically build 20-25 a year
under a negotiated contract. Shawmut is always looking for a few more candidates
for the CMST program.

12, 2002 and has been living in Lancaster, PA since graduating from Maine.
He is working as an assistant project manager for High Construction Company
in Lancaster, PA. In his spare time he can be found remodeling his house,
riding his Harley Davidson motorcycle, or waterskiing. He is interested in
finding the where-a-bouts of Kirk Sandvoss (1995), a fellow alumni.

at Dufresne-Henry. He is working in Presque Isle near family, friends and
daughter.
Mathew Richard (2003)
just started work at the Fusco Corp. Hist first assignment is a 100,000 sf.,
two story K-8th grade school. He said "lots of details, and just like
Knud said, lots of paperwork, or how Fusco likes to say 'document control.'" He
is doing submittals in PRO-LOG, and will be acquiring new responsibilities
in the near future.
Shane Oates (1995)
is currently a project manager at Coneco Engineers & Scientists in Bridgewater, Massachusetts.
They have offices located in Connecticut and Rhode Island. After a short
period of employment at home in Portsmouth, New Hampshire after graduation,
he had a great opportunity with a firm in Birmingham, Alabama where he stayed
for three very hot & humid years. He then returned to the New England
area and worked for three years in Boston at Ammann & Whitney before
seeking employment without the wonderful Boston morning commute. He currently
lives in East Taunton, Massachusetts. He is engaged to be married next year.

notification letters to subcontractors. It's great, big change from the Big
Dig where she worked for the past 5 years. Joni is currently training for
the Boston Marathon, marathon #6 (26.2 miles). She is running for a charity
by the name of Healthworks Foundation <www.healthworksfoundation.org>.

For winning FIRST place in the Region 1, Associated
Schools of Construction Competition in the Heavy Highway Class
(the Northeastern States). Although their projects were more
difficult than anticipated, their solid preparation, technical
skills, and strong organizational approach to preparing their
estimate, bid, schedule, means and methods prevailed over stiff
competition from four other strong schools in the Heavy Highway
competition class.
The next step is for the UMaine CMT Team to
represent the University of Maine and Region 1 of ASC in the
National Competition at the AGC National Competition next week.
Faculty advisors were Ray Werkmeister and Chuck Gould.
