Student Organizations Related to Mechanical Engineering Technology

The ASHRAE student section touring Bangor Air
National Guard KC135.
American Society of Heating, Refrigeration,
and Air-conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE)
Students took a number of interesting tours this year. These
included a tour of the HVAC systems on a KC135 airplane, a tour
of the ice making system in Alfond Arena (including a Diesel
powered cogeneration system), and a tour of the innovative HVAC
system at Lemforder where 25 heat pumps raise or lower temperature
from a base established by a machine cooling loop.

MET students win Best Sinking Award at the 2005 ASME Cardboard
Canoe contest.
ASME International (Previously American Society
of Mechanical Engineers)
ASME held the 12 th annual cardboard canoe race in September.
Student teams had one hour to build a canoe using only cardboard
and package tape. The race was moved indoors to the university
pool due to a torrential downpour. We had many good designs but
the fastest canoe was built by MET student Forest Fyrberg and
ME student Kyle Fitzgerald.
Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE)
MET students participated in the SAE Clean
Snowmobile Challenge 2005 at Michigan Tech, with Maine taking
Fourth Place overall and distinguished as the “Best Value” winner!
Society of Women Engineers (SWE)
MET alumna Jackie Ritchie Flynn currently
serves as the President of the Maine Section of SWE. Assoc.
Prof. Karen Horton serves as Vice President. SWE provides fifth
and sixth grade girls from the Abnaki Girl Scout Council a "Science in Action" Badge
Day each year.
