The Sociology faculty are deeply
committed to high-quality undergraduate teaching. Since we do not have a
graduate program, undergraduates are our only focus. We thus offer a
welcoming, student-centered atmosphere, and our students typically tell
us how much they appreciate the attention Sociology faculty and staff
show them inside and outside the classroom.
The B.A. in Sociology at the University of Maine is a liberal arts
degree with a plus. You will be broadly educated for a variety of
careers, and you will bring to these careers the abilities to think
critically about complex problems, to analyze the need for changes in
complex organizations, and to carry out research involving the
collection and analysis of both quantitative and qualitative data. You
will also bring to these careers a sociological understanding of the
sources and consequences of social inequality and of the impact of race
and ethnicity, social class, and gender on social institutions and
social behavior.
