International Social Work

Global Work with Immigrant Kids

  • Project Director: Gail Werrbach, Ph.D. LCSW

  • Funded by: The US Department of Education Fund for the Improvement of Post-Secondary Education (FIPSE)alth Bureau

  • Project Timeframe: 4 years -$210,000

The Global Work with Immigrant Kids (GWIK) Project builds on the success of our consortium that addressed training needs in Europe and the United States for a new social service practitioner in direct care settings with children. GWIK will continue our educational innovation by creating a Certificate curriculum with a focus on work with immigrant children. The consortium consists of three EU institutions: Plantijn (Belgium), Peter Sabroe (Denmark), Ramom Llull (Spain), and four U.S. institutions: U.Maine, Providence, UNC-Greensboro, and NC A & T. The consortium will meet twice a year for the annual grantee meeting and for EU/U.S. partner meetings. 24EU and 24U.S. students will complete the curriculum that will consist of semester-long exchanges, intensive language instruction, 15-week field internships, and five courses (four classroom and one-web-based). Agency field internships will utilize new web-based materials including a supervision manual and multi-lingual glossary of key knowledge related to immigrant children.  Twenty-five faculty exchanges will occur: 13EU and 12U.S. to provide classroom, seminar, and agency-based teaching.
