Practice Methods
SWK 560 Practice in Generalist Social Work I
Beginning graduate course focusing on development of knowledge,
values and skills necessary for direct practice of generalist social
work with small systems, including individuals, small groups and
families. Social systems and problem solving framework.
SWK 563 Practice in Generalist Social Work II
Explores the theory and practice of purposive social change in
social agencies and communities, participation of social workers in
politics, and social worker roles of advocate, resource mobilizer,
program planner, and organizer. Provides integration of the classroom
and field instruction experience.
SWK 661 Advanced Generalist Social Work Practice I with Individuals
Knowledge, skills, and values necessary for advanced generalist
social work practice with individuals.
SWK 664 Advanced Generalist Social Work Practice III with Families
and Small Groups
Knowledge, skills, and values necessary for advanced generalist

Professional integrative seminar focuses on purposes of the
profession; the multi-disciplinary knowledge bases that inform practice;
professional role, skill, and policy applications; and evaluation of
practice.
Social Welfare Policy
SWK 540 Social Welfare Policy and Issues for Generalist Practitioners
Provides analytic perspective on the provision of social services
and the interrelatedness of practice and policy analysis. The
dimensions of choice in social welfare policy and major issues in
provision are examined.
SWK 640 Advanced Social Policy
Policy analysis and evaluation with emphasis on skills in the use of
government data, policy advocacy and analytic decision-making related to
social welfare and advanced generalist social work practice.

Beginning methods of social work research. Topics include
integration of social work theory, practice and research; problem
formulation; ethical concerns; research design; program evaluation.

Application of social work research methods to the evaluation of

Field Practicum
SWK 595 MSW Field Practicum in Social Work
Generalist social work practice in community agencies designed to
provide students the opportunity to apply social work knowledge and
skills directed toward planned intervention and change efforts.

Advanced generalist social work practice in community agencies.
Provides students the opportunity to apply advanced social work
knowledge and skills directed toward planned intervention and change
efforts.
Human Behavior and the Social Environment
SWK 550 Human Behavior and the Social Environment I
Examines research and traditional/alternative theories related to
normative life span development as influenced by age, gender, social
class, social structures, oppression, and other environmental factors.
Uses a systems theory and person-in-environment as the analytical
framework. Considers implications for social work practice and social
welfare policy.
SWK 650 Human Behavior and the Social Environment II
Examines research and traditional/alternative theories related to
normative development of families, small groups, and communities.
Explores the impact of age, gender, social class, social structures,
oppression, and other environmental factors. Examines the social
structure and context of organizations and institutions and their impact
on individuals, families, small groups, and communities. Considers
implications for social work practice and social welfare policy.

SWK 571 Assessment and Intervention of Trauma in Social Work
Practice
Current research and controversies will be explored in the areas of
psychobiology of trauma, memory, dissociation, developmental impacts,
diagnosis, and treatment. Considers implications for social work
practice.
SWK 572 Program Planning and Grant Writing
Integration of research methods, evaluation, policy analysis,
advanced social work practice to develop, plan and pose strategies for
social service program development and funding.
SWK 573 Supervision in Human Services I
Knowledge, skills and values for supervision in human service
agencies. Goal setting, personnel issues, models of social work
supervision.
SWK 574 Supervision in Human Services II
Continues the supervision topics addressed in Supervision I.
Emphasis on power dynamics as related to diversity in gender, race,
religion, age, and position in the supervisory dyad. Supervisory skills
for staff evaluation and feedback.
SWK 575 Family Therapy in Social Work Practice I
Overview of models of family therapy for social work practice.
Emphasis on assessment and intervention with families, children and
couples.
SWK 576 Family Therapy in Social Work Practice II
Emphasis on brief solution-focused and narrative models of family
therapy in social work practice.
SWK 577 Group Strategies in Health/Mental Health Settings
Group strategies for social work practice in health and mental health
settings including team-meetings, psychoeducational issues in health
care, workshops, communities, organizations, counseling and
psychotherapy.
SWK 580 Adult and Child Psychopathology
Overview of DSMIV, gender differences in mental illness, current
conceptions of serious mental illness, impact of psychiatric labeling
and stigma on individuals and families. This course meets requirement
for clinical social work licensure.
