Accessibility
(Policy approved by social work faculty May 12, 1993)
The School of Social Work is committed to providing access to the School
for people with disabilities. A person with a disability is anyone who
has, or is treated as having, a physical or mental impairment that
substantially affects a major life activity such as seeing, walking or
working. A qualified person with a disability is someone whose
experience, education, and training enable the person to meet essential
course or program requirements with or without a reasonable
accommodation. An accommodation is any change in the work or learning
environment or in the way things are customarily done that enables a
person with a disability to have equal opportunities.
People with disabilities have a right to request accommodations, and are
encouraged to talk directly with the responsible faculty member or
program administrator. Faculty members and administrators are
responsible for responding to requests for accommodation. Some common
types of accommodations which may be needed include:
A social work faculty member or
administrator who receives a request for an accommodation will explore,
with the student making the request, options that will enable the
student to meet the requirements of the social work program
successfully. When accommodations cannot be provided with existing
School resources, the Director of the School will seek the resources
necessary for the accommodation through the University Office of Equal
Opportunity.
Students with disabilities are also encouraged to contact Ann Smith,
Counselor and Coordinator of Services for Students with Disabilities,
Onward Building (581-2319). Additional information about University
procedures for accommodating individuals with disabilities is available
through the Office of Equal Opportunity, 101 North Stevens Hall
(581-1226).
