Sample Plan of Study
The full-time and part-time options
consist of 63 semester credit hours; the advanced standing option
consists of 42-43 semester credit hours. In the full-time and part-time
option there are 44 credits of classroom work and 19 credits of
supervised practicum. In the advanced standing option there are 32-33
credits of classroom work and 10 credits of supervised practicum. A
weekend option offered from the University's new facility at Belfast,
Maine has recently been added.
Full-Time Option
Full-time students complete the program in two years. Foundation year
courses are scheduled at the UM School of Social Work on Monday and
Tuesday, and all advanced year courses are scheduled on Wednesday and
Thursday. Courses are sequential, and most required courses are offered
once a year during the day. All foundation courses must be completed
before students begin the advanced year. Full-time students are only
admitted in the Fall of each year.
Part-Time Option
Students who are employed or have other extensive commitments are
encouraged to consider part-time study. Part-time students complete the
program in three or four years. Classes are scheduled at the UM School
of Social Work one-day per week. Part-time students are only admitted in
the Fall of each year. Part-time students must complete all requirements
within four years of admission to the MSW program. Part-time students
are eligible for financial aid programs if they carry at least 6
credits.
Advanced Standing Option
Advanced standing in the MSW program is awarded to students who have
earned a BSW degree from a Council on Social Work Education accredited
program, have met the advanced standing admission criteria described in
the admissions materials, and are recommended for advanced standing by
the Admissions Committee. Applicants accepted with advanced standing
status are required to attend two months of summer courses that provide
new content and serve as a "bridge" to the advanced year of the MSW
program. Daytime classes are offered during June and July. Advanced
standing students are admitted into the MSW program for June of each
year.
Weekend Option
The Weekend option is offered at the Hutchinson Center in Belfast,
Maine. This option is designed for students interested in a convenient,
part-time, weekend format. For the foundation level, students will
complete two classes per semester on Friday nights and Saturday
mornings. Students will complete the Foundation Level classes and the
majority of Advanced Level classes in the Weekend format at the
Hutchinson Center, a new state of the art facility of the University of
