February 17: Professor Kim Huisman along with co-author Mazie Hough from Women’s Studies will be joined by students Muna Abdullahi and Keyfa Mohamud for a talk at the College of the Atlantic on Mount Dessert Island. They will be discussing the Somali Narrative Project and doing a reading from the new book Somalis In Maine: Crossing Cultural Currents.

February 24: Professor Kyriacos Markides to present at The Climacus Conference in Louisville, KY.

The Mystical Spirituality of Byzantine Christianity – Kyriacos C. Markides. Professor Kyriacos C. Markides continues a 30-year exploration of Christian mysticism through his participant observation work with charismatic healers, monks, hermits and celebrated living saints of Eastern Christianity. In this workshop he will show us that there is a clearly identifiable experiential mystical tradition within Christianity that has been practiced for hundreds of years in ancient monasteries and convents, yet is little known to Western seekers who assume authentic spirituality could only be found in eastern religions such as Hinduism and Buddhism.

March 23-25: Professor Kyriacos Markides will be an invited speaker and workshop leader for the book club at the Greek Orthodox Annunciation Cathedral in Augusta, Georgia.

March 29: Reception for Professor Kyriacos Markides in honor of the release (March 6) of his new book Inner River: A Pilgrimage to the Heart of Christian Spirituality. Professor Markides will read from his book and sign copies which can be purchased in the bookstore or at Amazon.com. Bangor Room, Memorial Union, 4-6 PM.

April 13: Professor Kim Huisman will be doing a campus talk at Bowdoin College on her book Somalis In Maine: Crossing Cultural Currents. She will be joined by co-authors Mazie Hough from Women’s Studies and Maine Studies Program Director, Carol Nordstrom Turner.
