Research Areas

International Economic Development; Agricultural Production

Dr. Dalton's research focuses broadly around technological change in agriculture and its relationship to the environment and household welfare. His research also examines how agricultural technology can be used to mitigate labor shocks in less developed countries and increase farm income in the United States.

Currently, Dr. Dalton is researching technical change in West Africa and how short-term illness impacts the efficiency of food production and farm household welfare. Recently, he has studied the adoption of soil conservation and fertility management technologies in Viet Nam and Thailand, the relationship between U.S. agri-environmental policy and farm welfare, and the benefits of integrating crop and livestock production. Dr. Dalton also conducts research on dairy production and processing in the state of Maine and is studying the profitability and riskiness of organic dairy farming in collaboration with the University of Vermont. He has received research support from the USDA National Research Initiative, Integrated Organic initiative in addition to international, state, and industry sources.

Prior to joining the faculty of University of Maine, Dr. Dalton worked for several years in West Africa and focused on technology adoption decisions, production system evolution, and sustaining long-run crop and livestock productivity through technological change. He is an Associate Editor of the American Journal of Agricultural Economics.
