This position is the newly created “Farm Credit/CoBank Assistant Professorship in Production Economics/Agricultural Finance.” It is a nine-month (academic year), tenure-track position in the School of Economics at the University of Maine.
The successful candidate will primarily teach and conduct research in the areas of production economics and agricultural finance. The individual will also lead research projects in cooperation with other college units; various agricultural, food and fiber industry groups; as well as companies and agencies.
The number of courses taught per year in the School of Economics varies according to faculty interests, School needs, and other work activities. We envision this position having an initial teaching load of up to three courses per year, in addition to leading a field experience course in the area of agricultural and business finance. Teaching responsibilities (undergraduate and/or graduate) will likely come from the following areas: production economics, microeconomics, risk analysis, and agricultural and business finance. The field experience will involve collaboration with Farm Credit in the thoughtful modifications to the School of Economics Farm Credit Fellowship program.
Specific research duties include:
A Ph.D. degree at the time of hire in production economics, agricultural economics, economics, resource economics, finance or related fields, with training in production economics, and demonstrated knowledge in finance. The successful applicant will have demonstrated the potential to publish research results. Effective communication skills, both written and oral, and the ability to interact with faculty from various disciplines, government, industry and the public are essential. Applicants who possess some knowledge of agricultural systems in the United States, risk management, evidence of leadership, and experience in building and fostering relationships with diverse stakeholders, will be given preference. The successful candidate will also have demonstrated an interest in leading the Farm Credit Fellowship program.
START DATE: Funding available starting on September 1, 2013; however, the successful candidate may begin the job as late as January 1, 2014.
