Admission Requirements

1. Admission Requirements for the Bachelor of Music in Education Degree
Students taking the entrance audition should show an adequate knowledge of basic piano literature of the Baroque, Romantic, and Contemporary periods. Pieces selected should demonstrate expressiveness of performance as well as technical facility. Suggested repertoire can be found in the series Classics to Moderns, Vols. 27 and 37. Entering students should also be able to perform the following:

Major and minor scales : 2 octaves hands together.
Major and minor arpeggios : 2 octaves hands together.
Sight reading will be done at all auditions.


2. Expectations for the piano major in the Bachelor of Music Education Degree
The piano major in the Bachelor of Music in Education Degree will, in addition, to learning solo literature, be expected to develop skills in basic musicianship such as the following:
1. sight reading
2. transposition
3. harmonization of melodies
4. transcribing from tapes
5. play literature for four hands

A one half hour recital is required in the junior year. One piece must be memorized.


3. Admission Requirements for the Bachelor of Music in Performance Degree
For the performance degree the entrant's audition should show a more advanced knowledge of piano literature. The entrance exam will consist of pieces comparable to the following:


An Invention or part of a French or English Suite by J.S. Bach.
At least one movement from a sonata of Haydn, Mozart, or Beethoven.
A Prelude, Nocturne, or Impromptu by Frederick Chopin.
A contemporary piece from Kabalevsky, Ginastera or Bartók.
Since memorization is an important aspect of the piano performance degree, at least one piece should be memorized for the audition.

4. Expectations for the piano major in the Bachelor of Music in Performance Degree
A piano major in the Bachelor of Music in Performance Degree must possess qualities that enable him/her to express musical ideas under the stress of performance and to have the ability to concentrate and to persevere through long hours of practice. Except for avant garde works, all pieces should be memorized for the half hour junior recital and for the one hour required senior recital.

Suggested repertoire for Bachelor of Music in Performance Degree over a four year period:
- At least one movement from a sonata each year.
- Two or more movements each year from the French or English Suites and/or from the Partitas.
- Preludes and Fugues from the WTC of J.S. Bach.
- Preludes, Nocturnes, Imprompti, Scherzi, Ballades, from F. Chopin.
- Contemporary literature: Bartók Microcosmos Vols. IV, V, VI.
- Visions Fugitives-Prokofiev.
