Athena
Consort A
select choir of women’s voices,
which sings a broad repertoire of choral literature spanning nine centuries.
Emphasis is placed on music composed specifically for treble/women’s choir. Black
Bear Men's Chorus The
newest choir at UMaine, the 50-voice Men's Chorus is open to members of the
university community and beyond. The Chorus performs with the Athena Consort and
at the annual Yuletide Concert. Chamber
Music The
chamber music program gives
students a chance to perform with faculty each fall, and spring semester. Collegiate
Chorale The Collegiate Chorale performs
choral music of diverse musical styles. In addition to its other presentations,
it combines with the University Singers and the Oratorio Society for a special
holiday concert. The group is open to all students, and no audition is required. Concert
Band The University of Maine Concert Band
is a non-auditioned group that plays a variety of concert band literature. It
presents concerts both on and off campus in formal and informal settings,
including Commencement and a combined concert with the Symphonic Band. Jazz
Ensemble & Combo The University of Maine
Jazz Ensemble is made up of student musicians who have a decided emphasis on
American music and jazz. The usual performances include a run-out concert and a
tour. Marching
Band With
their motto "Pride, Spirit,
and Drive," the marching band carries its spirit to all home football
games. Previous experience is not required due to the fact that there is a band
camp several days before the semester begins. They make weekend trips to away
games, parades, and band shows. Opera
Workshop The UMaine Opera Workshop involves
students in all aspects of musical theater production. Students rehearse and
perform music from the standard opera, operetta and musical repertoire, as well
as chamber operas and experimental works in a workshop setting. Oratorio
Society The Oratorio Society rehearses and
performs major choral/orchestral works. Membership is open to students and
community members; however, musical experience is required.
Orchestra The University Orchestra rehearses and
performs music from the standard orchestral repertoire as well as occasional
collaboration with the Oratorio Society and Opera Workshop. Each spring the
Orchestra presents its annual Concerto Concert with student winners of the
Concerto Competition. Pep
Band
Maine's
ice hockey band, "The Screaming Black
Bears" and the basketball pep band both attend home games in their
respective sports to cheer on the teams. This is an exciting chance to watch
your teams in action as well as travel with them if they go to the playoffs.
They play music similar to that of marching band.
Percussion
Ensemble
In addition to European based compositions, the
ensemble performs in a variety of world music genres such as salsa,
African drumming and Brazilian samba. The ensemble performs around the State of
Maine, has traveled to southern France and was the first U.S. percussion
ensemble ever to perform in Cuba. Symphonic
Band The UM Symphonic Band is dedicated
to the playing of serious literature written for band and smaller wind and
percussion groups. The organization meets twice a week and admission to the
course requires an audition which is used for placement. The band does several
run-out concerts and also tours each year. University
Singers
University of Maine Singers is a
select 64-voice ensemble whose members come from all disciplines across campus.
The Singers tour in the northeastern part of the United States for one week each
spring, and Europe every four years. The ensemble regularly performs with the
Bangor Symphony Orchestra and has contributed to significant choral/orchestral
works.
