Progress on Objective 11
Broaden Community Support for the
University and its Comprehensive Campaign
Strategic Plan Goals 1,6,7
Enhancing Service Learning and Voluntarism to increase community
service and internships by UMaine students, staff, and faculty
-The university worked with donors such as the Bodwells and an anonymous
donor
to create volunteer opportunities both on and off campus and incent
students to participate (e.g., FY07 was the first year of the Servant
Heart scholarship which gave scholarships to students involved in
community service). We successfully got a four-year commitment from an
anonymous donor for $100,000 and from the Bodwells for $80,000.
-The Dean of Students Office initiated conversations with the Center for
Teaching Excellence to identify opportunities for cooperation and
collaboration for service learning.
- The Coordinator of the Bodwell Center
position was established as a regular E & G funded professional position
to bring heightened energy and consistency to volunteer and community
service efforts.
-The spectrum and number of local
agencies with which the Bodwell Center works were expanded in an effort
to maximize outreach and impact, and the center enlarged the number of
on campus departmental partners. The center revised marketing and
outreach efforts (e.g., web site in particular) in order to attract more
student and staff volunteers, and it initiated a review of implementing
international volunteer opportunities.
