Progress on Objective 8
Increase International Research and
Education
Strategic Plan Goals 1,4
Establishing more collaborative research and educational exchange
agreements with international institutions in countries where UMaine has
or needs research and/or teaching strength.
-UMaine signed a collaborative agreement to seek possible synergies in
research with the Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia, a leading
private university in Peru that includes the country's top medical
school.
-A collaborative research agreement for wood sciences-engineering has
been signed with the University of Natural Resources and Allied Life
Sciences, Vienna, Austria. We have been approached by the University of
Milan (Food Science) and an institution in Finland for math.
-For educational exchange, we have entered into agreements with Academic
Programs International (API), so that our students can use their
programs and be eligible for scholarships. The Project Maine France
consortium is seeing active exchanges throughout the University of Maine
System.
-The University of Maine has the capability of sending a UMaine student
nearly anywhere in the world due to the range of exchange agreements and
affiliations with Study Abroad organizations undertaken by the Office of
International Programs.
-The Office of International Programs (OIP) was approached by the
Institute of International Education to be a host institution for a
number of one-year students from the former Soviet republics. OIP is
also part of a grant submitted to USAID for journalism in Tanzania.
-Planning is well advanced for offering a graduate certificate in
College Student Development and Higher Education leadership from the
UMaine College of Education to the faculty and staff at the Universidad
de las Americas (UDLA) in Puebla, Mexico.
