Notes.

  1. Only fall semester matriculants were included in these data.
  2. "First generation" definition #1: neither parent ever attended college.
"First generation" definition #2: neither parent ever earned a college degree.
  3. "First generation-ness" was identified using a new freshman survey; responses rates ranged from 55% to 85% across cohort years.
  4. Transfer students were placed into a cohort based on matriculation date and matriculation level.  For example, a transfer student matriculating as a sophomore in Fall 2000 would have been placed in the Fall 1999 cohort.  "Non-traditional-ness" was based on transfer students' dates of birth compared to the October 15th census date of the cohort into which they were placed.   For example,  transfers students placed in the Fall 1999 cohort had their "non-traditional-ness" based on an October 15, 1999 census date irrespective of their actual matriculation date.
  5. The percentage of transfer students enrolled one semester and one, two, and three years after matriculation is based on the number of the cohort enrolled in those semesters divided by members of the cohort who had the opportunity to be enrolled in that semester.  For example, sophomore matriculants in Fall 2004 were placed in the Fall 2003 cohort.  Those transfer students did not have an opportunity to be enrolled one semester or one year after matriculation.  As a result those transfer students (i.e., those matriculating in Fall 2004 as sophomores) were excluded from the percentage enrolled one semester and one year after matriculation.
