 Alternative Loan Counseling

Each student applying for an Alternative (Private) Educational Loan must complete an Alternative Loan Counseling session. The counseling session must be completed before we will process your loan.

The information provided in this loan counseling session is designed to educate all University of Maine students regarding the effective use of alternative funding. The goal of the Office of Student Financial Aid is to protect students from the potential dangers associated with borrowing substantial amounts of money for their educational purposes. To accomplish this goal, the following areas will be reviewed:

  1.  How Much Can I Afford To Borrow?
  2.  Should You Borrow An Alternative Loan?
  3.  What Is An Alternative Loan?
  4.  Other Options
  5.  Establish A Budget
  6.  Reduce Your Expenses
  7.  Application Process
  8.  Know Your Credit Score
  9.  Repayment: Loans Must Be Repaid!
  10.  A Word About Credit Cards
